Ignition barrel, switch and column lock repairs in Thames Ditton
The maddening part of an ignition fault is that everything else about the vehicle is perfectly fine. The engine is healthy, the battery is good, the keys are in your hand — and none of it counts for anything, because the barrel will not rotate.
We attend, diagnose properly, and where the parts and programming allow we finish the job in the same visit. If a part has to be ordered we say so up front rather than leaving the vehicle stripped and waiting.
School-run streets in Thames Ditton fill and empty in a hurry. An immobilised car in the middle of that is better repaired in place than dragged out.
Why the fault needs identifying before anything is replaced
Because the symptoms of a worn barrel, a failed switch and a jammed column lock are so similar, guesswork is expensive. We test to establish which component has actually failed rather than fitting the most likely candidate and seeing what happens.
Symptoms worth acting on
Any of the following is worth acting on rather than living with.
- Have developed a knack for getting the key to turn
- Barrel seized completely with the key inserted
- Snapped key, with part of it left in the lock
- Key trapped in the ignition and will not release
- Column lock will not disengage when starting
- ESL, ELV or ESCL fault reported by the vehicle
- Cylinder turns loosely with no resistance at all
- Starting is hit and miss with no obvious pattern

How a Thames Ditton call-out actually runs
Four stages, start to finish. Nothing hidden and no pressure at any point.
Tell us what it is doing
Call or message with the make, model, registration and what the key or wheel is doing. That usually tells us which parts and programming to bring.
We come to the vehicle
We attend wherever it is standing. We attend anywhere in Thames Ditton or the wider KT7 area. Anywhere the vehicle has come to rest is somewhere we can work.
Diagnose, then repair
We establish whether the fault is the barrel, the switch, the steering lock or the key, explain what we have found, and then rebuild, replace or programme as needed.
Test and hand back
We check the ignition, the steering lock release and the immobiliser all behave correctly before we leave, and the work is covered by a parts and labour warranty.
Covering Thames Ditton and the KT7 area
Our Thames Ditton work takes in Thames Ditton village, Weston Green, Giggs Hill Green and the KT7 riverside streets.
We work in the quieter streets and the outlying lanes without needing the vehicle moved first. We have no workshop to bring the vehicle to, and that is the point. The repair happens where the vehicle already is, so recovery is usually avoidable entirely.
We are based at Greenhedges, Felcot Road, East Grinstead, West Sussex RH19 2QA, which puts Thames Ditton comfortably within our regular working area.
Nearby coverage
Alongside Thames Ditton we regularly attend Esher, Claygate, Weybridge, Oxshott, Chertsey and Epsom.
We travel widely — all of Surrey, plus Sussex, Kent, Berkshire, Essex and London. Tell us the postcode and we will say yes or no honestly.

Why ignition barrels fail, and what it feels like when they do
A barrel is a precision lock doing a heavy-duty job. The wafers inside have to align within very fine tolerances, and every turn of the key erodes those tolerances a fraction further.
Duplicated keys compound the wear. Each copy is cut from the last, so tolerances drift, and a third-generation copy can be measurably off-profile while still appearing to work.
Nobody books a repair for a slightly stiff ignition, and that is understandable. But stiffness is the stage at which a rebuild is usually still possible, and a seized barrel is the stage at which it usually is not.
Vehicles we see this on most around Thames Ditton
We see the full spread, but vans lead the way. A Transit or Relay used for deliveries might see fifty ignition cycles a day, against half a dozen for a commuter car — so the barrels wear out years sooner. Golf, Crafter, Boxer, Audi, Honda, Hyundai, Vauxhall and Mercedes are all regulars.
Electronic steering locks: ESL, ELV and ESCL faults
On many vehicles from the mid-2000s onward the mechanical steering lock has been replaced by an electronic steering lock — ESL, ELV or ESCL depending on the manufacturer. Instead of a cable and pawl, a small motorised unit locks and releases the column electronically on start-up.
When one of these units fails it commonly fails locked, with a warning on the dash and a steering wheel that will not release. Because the module sits in the immobiliser chain, a replacement usually has to be programmed to the vehicle rather than simply bolted on. That is specialist work, and it is a large part of what we do.
How to tell an ESL fault from a barrel fault
Barrel or ESL is usually settled in the first few minutes. A barrel problem resists the key. An ESL problem leaves the key working fine while the vehicle itself refuses to co-operate.
What to do right now if your key will not turn
Stop. A stiff barrel that is being forced is a barrel that is about to contain half a key. That single decision is the difference between a rebuild and an extraction followed by a replacement.
These are worth two minutes of your time before you call us out.
- Relieve pressure on the column by rocking the wheel as you turn the key
- Check the gearbox is genuinely in Park, or the clutch pedal is on the floor
- Swap to the spare key if you have one — it isolates key wear from barrel wear
- Look closely at the key for wear, distortion or cracks
- Remove fobs, tags and other keys from the ring to take the weight off
- Do not use WD-40 or similar in the barrel; it makes matters worse, not better
- Do not attempt to extract a snapped key with tools
If the key has already snapped
Do not touch it. Extraction from an undisturbed barrel is straightforward and the lock frequently survives. Extraction after somebody has been at it with pliers or a drill usually means a new barrel and new programming.
Mobile repair or recovery to a garage?
A recovery truck solves a location problem, not a technical one. You still arrive at a workshop that has to diagnose the fault, and general garages often subcontract ignition and immobiliser work anyway.
Column and dash access is all that is required, which makes a driveway, a work car park or a roadside layby entirely adequate. Any programming the vehicle needs is done there and then.
Some faults do need more than a single visit. Where that is the case we say so clearly and explain why, rather than leaving the vehicle in pieces while something is chased up.
What the work covers
After diagnosis, the job will be one of the following pieces of work.
- Barrel service and rebuild — the cheapest route where wear has not gone too far
- New barrel supplied and fitted — with any coding the vehicle demands
- Key extraction — snapped or jammed keys removed with specialist tooling
- Switch replacement — where the barrel turns but the electrics do not respond
- Column lock work — mechanical repair or electronic module replacement
- ESL / EIS replacement and coding — Mercedes-Benz and other supported makes
- Emulator programming — a durable option on the platforms that accept it
Every visit finishes with the ignition, steering lock and immobiliser tested together, and the work carries a parts and labour warranty.
Ignition and steering lock FAQs for Thames Ditton
The questions we are asked most often by customers in this area.
Is there a call-out charge?
We do not charge a call-out fee. The price is for the repair, quoted once the fault has been diagnosed — not a fee for arriving and then a second figure for the work.
Is the work guaranteed?
Yes, there is a parts and labour warranty on what we fit, and every job ends with a functional check of the ignition, steering lock and immobiliser together.
The steering wheel is locked solid. Is that the ignition or the steering lock?
Either is possible. The distinction usually comes down to whether the key feels normal. Key trouble points at the barrel; a healthy key with a column that will not free off points at the steering lock.
My key turns but the vehicle will not start. Is that still an ignition fault?
It often is, but not the part most people expect. When the barrel rotates normally and nothing happens electrically, the fault is frequently the ignition switch behind the barrel rather than the lock itself. It can also be the immobiliser or the steering lock refusing to confirm it has released.
Do you work on vans, campervans and horse boxes?
We do, and commercial vehicles are a large share of what we see. Vans accumulate ignition cycles far faster than cars, so Transit, Custom, Relay, Boxer and Crafter barrels fail comparatively early. Campervan and horse box conversions are no problem.
Can I get a quote over the phone?
To a point, yes. Tell us the vehicle and what it is doing and we will explain the likely scenarios and what each involves. Pinning it to a single figure before diagnosis would just be guesswork.
Do you come out to Thames Ditton, or do I bring the vehicle to you?
You do not need to bring it anywhere. We attend Thames Ditton and the KT7 area as standard, working at the vehicle on a driveway, in a car park or at the roadside.
My key will not turn in the ignition. What should I do first?
Stop forcing it. Continued force is the most common cause of a key snapping off inside the barrel, which adds an extraction job before the actual fault can be repaired. Check the steering wheel is not under load against a kerb, try your spare key if you have one, then call us with the make, model and registration.
Can the ignition barrel be repaired rather than replaced?
Frequently it can. A rebuild replaces the worn internals while keeping your original key, which is usually the cheaper route and avoids any reprogramming. It depends on how far the wear has gone, so we assess the barrel before recommending anything.
