Why ignition barrels fail, and what it feels like when they do
Inside the barrel, small sprung components must line up precisely before the cylinder can rotate at all. Metal wears, springs weaken, and old lubricant dries out and turns gummy. Once alignment is marginal the barrel becomes unpredictable.
The key and the lock wear as a pair, which is why fitting a new barrel to an old worn key sometimes solves nothing. Both halves have to be assessed together.
Most people adapt to a failing ignition without really noticing — a particular angle, a particular wiggle. That adaptation is the warning, and it is the cheapest point to intervene.

Electronic steering locks: ESL, ELV and ESCL faults
Where an older car had a steel pawl and a cable, a modern one has a motorised module clamped to the column. It is a sealed electronic assembly, and when it fails it usually fails in the locked position.
When one of these units fails it commonly fails locked, with a warning on the dash and a steering wheel that will not release. Because the module sits in the immobiliser chain, a replacement usually has to be programmed to the vehicle rather than simply bolted on. That is specialist work, and it is a large part of what we do.
How to tell an ESL fault from a barrel fault
Barrel or ESL is usually settled in the first few minutes. A barrel problem resists the key. An ESL problem leaves the key working fine while the vehicle itself refuses to co-operate.
What to do right now if your key will not turn
Put the pliers down. Forcing a stiff barrel is how keys break, and a key broken off flush inside the cylinder is a materially harder and more expensive job than the original fault ever was.
These are worth two minutes of your time before you call us out.
- Rock the steering wheel gently while turning the key — the column may be loaded against a kerb or at full lock
- Make sure the vehicle is properly in Park, or in gear with the clutch down on a manual
- Try your spare key; if the spare works, the fault is the key rather than the barrel
- Check the key for visible wear, bending or a cracked plastic head
- Take heavy items off the keyring — weight on the barrel causes and worsens this fault
- Do not spray oil or lubricant into the barrel; it collects grit and makes the eventual repair harder
- Never lever or drill at a snapped key — extraction is far easier before anyone has dug at it
If the key has already snapped
Leave the broken section in place. It is far easier to extract a key that is sitting where it broke than one that has been driven deeper into the cylinder by attempts to remove it.
Mobile repair or recovery to a garage?
Loading the vehicle onto a truck changes its postcode, not its fault. And it puts you at the back of a queue at a garage that may then look for an ignition specialist anyway.
The job happens in the driver's footwell and around the column, so lifting the vehicle is irrelevant. That is the reason mobile ignition work is practical at all, and why we can programme modules at the kerbside.
There are exceptions, and we will say so. Some faults need a part that has to be ordered, and a few need bench work. What we will not do is load the vehicle onto a truck before anyone has established what is actually wrong with it.
