Ignition Specialists in Chertsey

Ignition faults fixed where the vehicle stands in Chertsey

Ignition and steering lock faults are among the few problems that immobilise a vehicle completely while leaving almost no external clue as to the cause. Correct diagnosis before anything is replaced matters more here than on nearly any other job.

We would rather spend the first part of the visit finding out what is genuinely wrong than fitting a new barrel and hoping. It is the difference between fixing the fault and replacing a component that was never the problem.

Chertsey generates a steady stream of this work — commuter cars on driveways, trade vans on estates, and vehicles stuck in car parks that were only meant to be occupied for an hour.

Why the fault needs identifying before anything is replaced

Identical symptoms, different causes. That is why we diagnose on arrival instead of quoting for a barrel over the phone. Sometimes the barrel is fine and the fault is behind it; occasionally the fault is the key in your hand.

How It Works

How a Chertsey call-out actually runs

It is a simple sequence, and it always runs in this order.

1

Give us the details

A quick call or WhatsApp with the vehicle, the registration and the symptom is usually enough for us to load the right parts and programming kit.

2

We travel to you

No recovery required — we work at the vehicle. We attend anywhere in Chertsey or the wider KT16 area. Home, work, roadside or car park — wherever it is standing.

3

Find the fault, fix the fault

Diagnosis first: barrel, switch, column lock or key. We tell you what we have found and what it needs before we start replacing anything.

4

Full check before we go

Ignition, column lock release and immobiliser are all tested together, and everything we fit carries a parts and labour warranty.

Covering Chertsey and the KT16 area

Our Chertsey work takes in Chertsey town centre, Addlestone, Lyne, Thorpe and the KT16 industrial estates.

We work on driveways, in company car parks and at the kerbside without needing anything from the site. As a mobile-only operation, everything happens at the vehicle. That removes the recovery cost from the equation in the majority of jobs.

We are based at Greenhedges, Felcot Road, East Grinstead, West Sussex RH19 2QA, which puts Chertsey comfortably within our regular working area.

Nearby coverage

Alongside Chertsey we regularly attend Weybridge, Woking, Esher, Claygate, Thames Ditton and Slough.

Coverage runs across Surrey and the rest of the South East: Sussex, Kent, Berkshire, Essex and London. Not certain you are inside it? Ask us.

Common questions

Ignition and steering lock FAQs for Chertsey

What Chertsey customers ask first — barrel, switch, steering lock and nearby coverage.

Do you repair ignition barrels and steering locks in Chertsey?

Yes. Mr Ignition is a mobile ignition barrel replacement and steering lock repair service covering Chertsey (KT16) in Surrey, including Chertsey town centre. We diagnose at the vehicle — driveway, workplace, car park or roadside — from our East Grinstead base.

Is a locked steering wheel in Chertsey the ignition barrel or the steering lock?

It can be either, so we diagnose rather than guess. A stiff or immovable key points at the barrel. A key that turns normally with a locked column or a dash warning points at steering lock repair or an electronic steering lock. The Knowledge Centre explains how those faults differ.

Can you extract a snapped key in Chertsey?

Yes. broken key extraction is routine work in Chertsey. Leave the broken section alone — an undisturbed barrel can often be saved. Forcing, drilling or hooking the fragment is what turns an extraction into a replacement.

Which towns near Chertsey do you cover?

As well as Chertsey we regularly cover Weybridge, Woking and Esher. The same mobile visit covers ignition barrel replacement, ignition switch replacement and steering lock repair. See every live page on areas we cover.

Do you programme Ford, Mercedes and other electronic steering locks in Chertsey?

Yes, on supported vehicles. That includes Mercedes ESL and EIS and ESL emulator programming for Ford, Renault, Nissan, BMW, MINI, Hyundai, Kia, Vauxhall and other listed makes. We confirm the lock at the vehicle in Chertsey before any module or emulator is programmed.

Can my Chertsey ignition barrel be rebuilt onto the existing key?

Often, yes — a rebuild is the first option we look at. It keeps your existing key and avoids immobiliser work. If the barrel is too far gone we replace it on supported cars and say so before starting. Related part references sit on the ignition barrel replacement page.

Is there a call-out fee for Chertsey?

No call-out fee. You are quoted for the diagnosed repair, not for us arriving. Call or get in touch with the registration, the fault and the Chertsey postcode.

Is ignition work in Chertsey guaranteed?

Yes. Parts and labour are warranted. Before we leave Chertsey we check the ignition, steering lock release and immobiliser together so the vehicle is confirmed as a system, not just at the repaired part.

Why ignition barrels fail, and what it feels like when they do

An ignition barrel contains a set of sprung wafers or tumblers that the key lifts into alignment. Every single insertion wears both the key and those wafers very slightly. After years of use the tolerances open up, alignment becomes marginal, and the barrel starts needing persuasion.

Keys are half the problem. A bent, worn or badly cut duplicate loads the wafers unevenly and wears them faster. This is precisely why a key can still open the doors while failing to turn the ignition.

The early warning signs are subtle and easy to live with, which is exactly why so many barrels get driven until they seize completely. If your key already needs a particular knack, the barrel is telling you something.

Vehicles we see this on most around Chertsey

Certain vehicles are simply over-represented. Ford Transit and Transit Custom, Volkswagen Golf and Crafter, Citroen Relay and Peugeot Boxer, plus Vauxhall, Honda, Hyundai, Audi and Mercedes-Benz. Campervans and horse boxes based on van platforms come up too, often with very high ignition cycle counts on low mileage.

Electronic steering locks: ESL, ELV and ESCL faults

On many vehicles from the mid-2000s onward the mechanical steering lock has been replaced by an electronic steering lock — ESL, ELV or ESCL depending on the manufacturer. Instead of a cable and pawl, a small motorised unit locks and releases the column electronically on start-up.

The consequence of an ESL failure is a car that will not start and a wheel that will not turn, often with a steering lock warning displayed. Fitting a replacement is only half the job — it then has to be matched to the vehicle electronically.

How to tell an ESL fault from a barrel fault

Barrel or ESL is usually settled in the first few minutes. A barrel problem resists the key. An ESL problem leaves the key working fine while the vehicle itself refuses to co-operate.

What to do right now if your key will not turn

Put the pliers down. Forcing a stiff barrel is how keys break, and a key broken off flush inside the cylinder is a materially harder and more expensive job than the original fault ever was.

Before ringing, run through the list below. Occasionally the answer is in there, and if not it still helps the diagnosis.

  • Take the load off the steering lock by moving the wheel gently while trying the key
  • Verify Park is properly engaged, or hold the clutch fully down
  • Use the spare key as a test — if it turns, the original key is the problem
  • Examine the key for obvious wear or damage
  • Reduce the keyring to the bare key and retry
  • Keep lubricants out of the ignition barrel entirely
  • Resist any DIY extraction of a broken key

If the key has already snapped

Leave it exactly as it is and call us. Broken key extraction is routine work when the barrel has been left alone, and the lock very often survives to be reused. Once somebody has attempted a DIY extraction, the barrel usually has to be replaced instead.

Mobile repair or recovery to a garage?

Loading the vehicle onto a truck changes its postcode, not its fault. And it puts you at the back of a queue at a garage that may then look for an ignition specialist anyway.

Ignition and steering lock work is well suited to being done on site. The components are reached from the steering column and the dash, not from underneath on a ramp, so a driveway or a car park space is a perfectly workable environment. Where programming is needed it is done at the vehicle with the equipment we carry.

We are not going to pretend everything is a one-visit fix. Occasionally a part has to come in, or a unit has to go on the bench. But that is a decision made after diagnosis, not before it.

What the work covers

After diagnosis, the job will be one of the following pieces of work.

  • Barrel rebuild — worn wafers and springs replaced so the original key works again
  • Barrel replacement — a new lock fitted, with key or immobiliser programming where required
  • Broken key extraction — the snapped section removed and the barrel assessed
  • Ignition switch replacement — for the electrical fault behind a barrel that turns normally
  • Steering lock repair or replacement — mechanical and electronic column locks
  • ESL / EIS programming — replacement modules matched to the vehicle, Mercedes included
  • ESL emulator programming — a programmed alternative on supported platforms

The final step is always a full functional check of ignition, steering lock and immobiliser, and the job carries a parts and labour warranty.
