Ignition faults fixed where the vehicle stands in Oxshott

The maddening part of an ignition fault is that everything else about the vehicle is perfectly fine. The engine is healthy, the battery is good, the keys are in your hand — and none of it counts for anything, because the barrel will not rotate.

The visit begins with diagnosis, not with a quote for a replacement. Getting that first step right is what decides whether the job turns out to be a rebuild, a switch, an emulator or a full replacement.

A jammed ignition on a village lane in Oxshott blocks more than one household. Finishing the job on the spot keeps the lane clear and the vehicle usable.

Why the fault needs identifying before anything is replaced

A key that will not turn, a wheel that will not release and a vehicle that will not start can all be caused by the ignition barrel, the ignition switch behind it, the steering lock, the immobiliser, or simply a worn key. The symptoms overlap almost entirely, so replacing the barrel on assumption is a common and expensive mistake.

Symptoms worth acting on

The symptoms below all point at the ignition, the switch or the column lock.

  • Key needs jiggling, wiggling or holding at a certain angle
  • Key will not turn at all, or turns part way and stops
  • Key has snapped off inside the barrel
  • Key goes in but will not come back out
  • Steering wheel stays locked and will not release
  • Steering lock, ESL or ELV warning showing on the dash
  • Barrel spins freely but nothing electrical happens
  • Vehicle starts intermittently, or cuts out if the key is nudged

How It Works

How a Oxshott call-out actually runs

It is a simple sequence, and it always runs in this order.

1

Tell us what it is doing

Call or message with the make, model, registration and what the key or wheel is doing. That usually tells us which parts and programming to bring.

2

We come to the vehicle

We attend wherever it is standing. We attend anywhere in Oxshott or the wider KT22 area. We work where the vehicle is, not where it would be convenient for a workshop.

3

Diagnose, then repair

We establish whether the fault is the barrel, the switch, the steering lock or the key, explain what we have found, and then rebuild, replace or programme as needed.

4

Test and hand back

We check the ignition, the steering lock release and the immobiliser all behave correctly before we leave, and the work is covered by a parts and labour warranty.

Covering Oxshott and the KT22 area

Our Oxshott work takes in Oxshott village, Stokesheath, Fairmile and the KT22 private roads.

Country lanes around here are no reason to wait for a recovery truck. We come to the vehicle. Because we operate as a mobile service rather than from a workshop, there is no need to arrange recovery before you speak to us — in most cases the vehicle never has to move.

We are based at Greenhedges, Felcot Road, East Grinstead, West Sussex RH19 2QA, which puts Oxshott comfortably within our regular working area.

Nearby coverage

Alongside Oxshott we regularly attend Claygate, Esher, Leatherhead, Fetcham, Weybridge and Guildford.

Why ignition barrels fail, and what it feels like when they do

Inside the barrel, small sprung components must line up precisely before the cylinder can rotate at all. Metal wears, springs weaken, and old lubricant dries out and turns gummy. Once alignment is marginal the barrel becomes unpredictable.

Key condition matters more than most people expect. A worn blade sits slightly wrong in the barrel, loads the wafers unevenly, and quietly damages the lock a little more every time it is used.

There is a window between "a bit awkward" and "will not move", and it is worth acting inside it. Once the cylinder seizes outright, the options narrow and the cost rises.

Vehicles we see this on most around Oxshott

Every make fails eventually, but the pattern is not even. Commercial vehicles dominate: Ford Transit and Custom, Citroen Relay, Peugeot Boxer and Volkswagen Crafter. On the car side, Golf, Audi, Honda, Hyundai, Vauxhall and Mercedes-Benz all feature. Multi-drop use is the common factor.

Electronic steering locks: ESL, ELV and ESCL faults

Newer vehicles do not use a mechanical lock on the column at all. An electronic steering lock module drives a pin in and out under software control, and reports back to the vehicle that it has done so.

A failed ESL typically leaves the column locked and the vehicle immobilised. Replacement parts are coded to the car, so the work involves programming as well as fitting. Where the platform supports it, a properly programmed emulator is a durable alternative.

How to tell an ESL fault from a barrel fault

Barrel or ESL is usually settled in the first few minutes. A barrel problem resists the key. An ESL problem leaves the key working fine while the vehicle itself refuses to co-operate.

What to do right now if your key will not turn

The single most useful thing you can do is stop forcing it. A key being forced in a stiff barrel is the most common way a bad situation becomes an expensive one, because a snapped key inside the cylinder turns a straightforward repair into an extraction job first.

Try the following first — some of these do resolve the problem, and all of them are useful information for us.

  • Relieve pressure on the column by rocking the wheel as you turn the key
  • Check the gearbox is genuinely in Park, or the clutch pedal is on the floor
  • Swap to the spare key if you have one — it isolates key wear from barrel wear
  • Look closely at the key for wear, distortion or cracks
  • Remove fobs, tags and other keys from the ring to take the weight off
  • Do not use WD-40 or similar in the barrel; it makes matters worse, not better
  • Do not attempt to extract a snapped key with tools

If the key has already snapped

Hands off, and give us a ring. An untouched broken key is a standard extraction. A key that has been drilled, glued or levered at is a barrel replacement.

Mobile repair or recovery to a garage?

Transport is the most avoidable cost in an ignition fault. The work itself happens at the column and the lock, both of which are entirely accessible where the vehicle already stands.

No ramp, no lift, no pit. Ignition and column lock work is cabin work, and the programming equipment travels with us.

There are exceptions, and we will say so. Some faults need a part that has to be ordered, and a few need bench work. What we will not do is load the vehicle onto a truck before anyone has established what is actually wrong with it.

What the work covers

What actually gets done depends entirely on the diagnosis. The realistic options are these.

  • Barrel service and rebuild — the cheapest route where wear has not gone too far
  • New barrel supplied and fitted — with any coding the vehicle demands
  • Key extraction — snapped or jammed keys removed with specialist tooling
  • Switch replacement — where the barrel turns but the electrics do not respond
  • Column lock work — mechanical repair or electronic module replacement
  • ESL / EIS replacement and coding — Mercedes-Benz and other supported makes
  • Emulator programming — a durable option on the platforms that accept it

In all cases the vehicle is checked as a whole — key, barrel, column lock and immobiliser — before we sign off, backed by a parts and labour warranty.

Common Questions

Ignition and steering lock FAQs for Oxshott

What customers around here usually ask us first.

My key will not turn in the ignition. What should I do first?

Leave it alone rather than forcing it. A snapped key turns a repair into an extraction plus a repair. Try easing the wheel side to side, check you are in Park or holding the clutch down, test the spare key, and then call 01342 612 356.

Can the ignition barrel be repaired rather than replaced?

Often, yes. Where the barrel is worn rather than destroyed we can frequently rebuild it to work with your existing key, which avoids the cost of a new lock and the need to re-key or reprogram. Whether that is possible depends on the vehicle and the condition of the parts, which is why we diagnose before quoting.

How quickly can you get to Oxshott?

That varies with the day and how busy we already are. Oxshott is comfortably inside our regular patch from our East Grinstead base, and same-day is often achievable. Rather than quote a time we cannot hold to, call and we will tell you what is realistic.

Do you handle electronic steering lock and Mercedes ESL faults?

We do, and it is a significant share of what we are called for. Mercedes ESL and EIS systems, plus electronic column locks on other makes, including the programming side rather than just fitting parts.

Can you get a snapped key out of the barrel?

Yes. Broken key extraction is a routine job for us and we carry specialist tools for it. In many cases the barrel survives the extraction and only needs servicing rather than replacing, provided nobody has attempted to dig the key out first.

Will a repair affect my immobiliser or mean new keys?

It depends on the route the repair takes. Rebuilds normally keep your original key and need no programming at all. New barrels and electronic modules usually do need coding to the vehicle. You will know which before we begin.

Which other areas near Oxshott do you cover?

Our coverage takes in Claygate, Esher and Leatherhead, the surrounding Surrey area, and onward into Sussex, Kent, Berkshire, Essex and London. Not sure? Call with the postcode.

Is there a call-out charge?

No. There is no call-out charge for attending. You are quoted for the work itself once we have seen the vehicle and established what has actually failed, rather than paying separately just for us to turn up.

Is the work guaranteed?

It is — parts and labour are both covered. Before we finish we check the ignition turns, the column releases and the immobiliser is satisfied, so nothing is signed off on assumption.
