Why ignition barrels fail, and what it feels like when they do

The failure mode is almost always cumulative rather than a single dramatic event. Key and barrel wear together, gradually, until the margin for error simply disappears and the cylinder jams.

Duplicated keys compound the wear. Each copy is cut from the last, so tolerances drift, and a third-generation copy can be measurably off-profile while still appearing to work.

If you have started thinking of it as a quirk rather than a fault, it is a fault. Barrels do not recover.

Electronic steering locks: ESL, ELV and ESCL faults

The move to electronic column locks means the lock is now part of the car's electronics rather than its mechanics. A tiny motor, a gearbox and a position sensor do the work the ignition key used to do directly.

An ESL failure is not something a general garage can usually resolve by fitting a part. The module must be programmed into the vehicle's security system, and on supported cars an emulator programmed to the original data is often the better route.

How to tell an ESL fault from a barrel fault

A mechanical barrel fault normally shows up in the key: it will not turn, or turns roughly. An electronic steering lock fault more often shows up as a dashboard warning, a wheel that stays locked while the key or start button behaves entirely normally, or a vehicle that cranks but refuses to release the column.

What to do right now if your key will not turn

Put the pliers down. Forcing a stiff barrel is how keys break, and a key broken off flush inside the cylinder is a materially harder and more expensive job than the original fault ever was.

A few quick checks are worth running through. They sometimes resolve it, and they always narrow down what we need to bring.

• Take the load off the steering lock by moving the wheel gently while trying the key
• Verify Park is properly engaged, or hold the clutch fully down
• Use the spare key as a test — if it turns, the original key is the problem
• Examine the key for obvious wear or damage
• Reduce the keyring to the bare key and retry
• Keep lubricants out of the ignition barrel entirely
• Resist any DIY extraction of a broken key

Mobile repair or recovery to a garage?

Recovery adds cost and delay without adding any diagnosis. The vehicle is loaded, transported, and then queued at a garage that may or may not have the specialist tooling for ignition and immobiliser work.

The job happens in the driver's footwell and around the column, so lifting the vehicle is irrelevant. That is the reason mobile ignition work is practical at all, and why we can programme modules at the kerbside.

Not every job finishes on the first visit. Some parts have to be ordered and some units need bench work — but you will know that from us, after a proper diagnosis rather than instead of one.
