Mobile ignition and steering lock repair in Richmond

An ignition barrel is a mechanical assembly operated several times a day, every day, for years on end. Wear is normal and eventual failure is predictable. What is never predictable is where the vehicle happens to be standing when it finally gives up.

We attend, diagnose properly, and where the parts and programming allow we finish the job in the same visit. If a part has to be ordered we say so up front rather than leaving the vehicle stripped and waiting.

New-build estates around Richmond have tight parking and few spare spaces. Leaving the vehicle where it sits, and repairing it there, is usually the practical option.

Why the fault needs identifying before anything is replaced

You cannot tell a barrel fault from a switch fault or a column lock fault by the symptom alone — they all end with a vehicle that will not go. Establishing which it is comes first, always.

How It Works

How a Richmond call-out actually runs

No mystery and no surprises. Four straightforward stages from the first call to a working ignition.

1

Give us the details

A quick call or WhatsApp with the vehicle, the registration and the symptom is usually enough for us to load the right parts and programming kit.

2

We travel to you

No recovery required — we work at the vehicle. We attend anywhere in Richmond or the wider TW9 area. Home, work, roadside or car park — wherever it is standing.

3

Find the fault, fix the fault

Diagnosis first: barrel, switch, column lock or key. We tell you what we have found and what it needs before we start replacing anything.

4

Full check before we go

Ignition, column lock release and immobiliser are all tested together, and everything we fit carries a parts and labour warranty.

Covering Richmond and the TW9 area

Our Richmond work takes in Richmond upon Thames, Richmond Green, the riverside, Kew edge and the TW9 residential streets.

New-build estate parking and visitor bays are tight, and we are used to working in them. As a mobile-only operation, everything happens at the vehicle. That removes the recovery cost from the equation in the majority of jobs.

We are based at Greenhedges, Felcot Road, East Grinstead, West Sussex RH19 2QA, which puts Richmond comfortably within our regular working area.

Nearby coverage

Alongside Richmond we regularly attend Kingston, New Malden, Battersea, Clapham, Esher and Thames Ditton.

We range well beyond London — Sussex, Surrey, Kent, Berkshire and Essex are all covered too. A quick call with your postcode settles it.

Key not turning today?

Do not force the key — that is how keys snap off inside the barrel. Call us and describe what is happening instead. We cover Richmond and the TW9 area.

Common questions

Ignition and steering lock FAQs for Richmond

What Richmond customers ask first — barrel, switch, steering lock and nearby coverage.

Do you repair ignition barrels and steering locks in Richmond?

Yes. Mr Ignition is a mobile ignition barrel replacement and steering lock repair service covering Richmond (TW9) in London, including Richmond upon Thames. We diagnose at the vehicle — driveway, workplace, car park or roadside — from our East Grinstead base.

Is a locked steering wheel in Richmond the ignition barrel or the steering lock?

It can be either, so we diagnose rather than guess. A stiff or immovable key points at the barrel. A key that turns normally with a locked column or a dash warning points at steering lock repair or an electronic steering lock. The Knowledge Centre explains how those faults differ.

Can you extract a snapped key in Richmond?

Yes. broken key extraction is routine work in Richmond. Leave the broken section alone — an undisturbed barrel can often be saved. Forcing, drilling or hooking the fragment is what turns an extraction into a replacement.

Which towns near Richmond do you cover?

As well as Richmond we regularly cover Kingston, New Malden and Battersea. The same mobile visit covers ignition barrel replacement, ignition switch replacement and steering lock repair. See every live page on areas we cover.

Do you programme Ford, Mercedes and other electronic steering locks in Richmond?

Yes, on supported vehicles. That includes Mercedes ESL and EIS and ESL emulator programming for Ford, Renault, Nissan, BMW, MINI, Hyundai, Kia, Vauxhall and other listed makes. We confirm the lock at the vehicle in Richmond before any module or emulator is programmed.

Can my Richmond ignition barrel be rebuilt onto the existing key?

Often, yes — a rebuild is the first option we look at. It keeps your existing key and avoids immobiliser work. If the barrel is too far gone we replace it on supported cars and say so before starting. Related part references sit on the ignition barrel replacement page.

Is there a call-out fee for Richmond?

No call-out fee. You are quoted for the diagnosed repair, not for us arriving. Call or get in touch with the registration, the fault and the Richmond postcode.

Is ignition work in Richmond guaranteed?

Yes. Parts and labour are warranted. Before we leave Richmond we check the ignition, steering lock release and immobiliser together so the vehicle is confirmed as a system, not just at the repaired part.

Why ignition barrels fail, and what it feels like when they do

Think of it as a lock that gets picked correctly several times a day for fifteen years. The wearing surfaces inside are tiny, they are under spring pressure constantly, and eventually they no longer line up as designed.

A worn key accelerates all of this. A key carried loose in a pocket for a decade, or copied from a copy, no longer matches the profile the barrel expects. It may still work the doors and fail in the ignition, because the ignition is the lock that takes the most load.

Nobody books a repair for a slightly stiff ignition, and that is understandable. But stiffness is the stage at which a rebuild is usually still possible, and a seized barrel is the stage at which it usually is not.

Vehicles we see this on most around Richmond

Ignition barrel wear is not brand-specific, but some platforms are noticeably more prone to it. Ford Transit and Transit Custom, Citroen Relay and Peugeot Boxer vans, Volkswagen Golf and Crafter, Vauxhall, Honda, Hyundai, Audi and Mercedes-Benz all come up regularly. Vans suffer worst, simply because the ignition is used far more times a day than on a private car.

Electronic steering locks: ESL, ELV and ESCL faults

On many vehicles from the mid-2000s onward the mechanical steering lock has been replaced by an electronic steering lock — ESL, ELV or ESCL depending on the manufacturer. Instead of a cable and pawl, a small motorised unit locks and releases the column electronically on start-up.

The consequence of an ESL failure is a car that will not start and a wheel that will not turn, often with a steering lock warning displayed. Fitting a replacement is only half the job — it then has to be matched to the vehicle electronically.

How to tell an ESL fault from a barrel fault

If the key feels wrong, suspect the barrel. If the key feels completely normal but the car will not release the wheel or start, suspect the electronic lock. Getting this right at the roadside is what stops the wrong part being fitted.

What to do right now if your key will not turn

The first rule is to stop trying. Force does not overcome worn wafers, it just finds the weakest point in the key — and that point is usually inside the lock.

These are worth two minutes of your time before you call us out.

  • Ease the steering wheel side to side while gently trying the key, in case the column is under load
  • Confirm the selector is fully in Park, or the clutch is fully depressed on a manual
  • Test the spare key — a working spare points at key wear, not barrel failure
  • Inspect the blade for bends, wear ridges or a split head
  • Strip the keyring down to just the key and try again
  • Avoid penetrating oils and lubricant sprays; they trap dirt inside the cylinder
  • Leave a broken key exactly where it is rather than attempting to pull it out

If the key has already snapped

Stop there and call. We carry extraction tooling and the job is routine — provided nothing has been pushed further in or snapped off deeper. That is the one thing that turns a cheap job into an expensive one.

Mobile repair or recovery to a garage?

Getting the vehicle to a garage means paying for transport before anyone has even identified the fault, then waiting for a workshop slot behind jobs that were booked in advance.

Column and dash access is all that is required, which makes a driveway, a work car park or a roadside layby entirely adequate. Any programming the vehicle needs is done there and then.

Some faults do need more than a single visit. Where that is the case we say so clearly and explain why, rather than leaving the vehicle in pieces while something is chased up.

What the work covers

Once we know what has failed, the work falls into one of these categories.

  • Barrel rebuild — worn wafers and springs replaced so the original key works again
  • Barrel replacement — a new lock fitted, with key or immobiliser programming where required
  • Broken key extraction — the snapped section removed and the barrel assessed
  • Ignition switch replacement — for the electrical fault behind a barrel that turns normally
  • Steering lock repair or replacement — mechanical and electronic column locks
  • ESL / EIS programming — replacement modules matched to the vehicle, Mercedes included
  • ESL emulator programming — a programmed alternative on supported platforms

Every visit finishes with the ignition, steering lock and immobiliser tested together, and the work carries a parts and labour warranty.
