Why ignition barrels fail, and what it feels like when they do

The failure mode is almost always cumulative rather than a single dramatic event. Key and barrel wear together, gradually, until the margin for error simply disappears and the cylinder jams.

The key and the lock wear as a pair, which is why fitting a new barrel to an old worn key sometimes solves nothing. Both halves have to be assessed together.

The early warning signs are subtle and easy to live with, which is exactly why so many barrels get driven until they seize completely. If your key already needs a particular knack, the barrel is telling you something.

We see the full spread, but vans lead the way. A Transit or Relay used for deliveries might see fifty ignition cycles a day, against half a dozen for a commuter car — so the barrels wear out years sooner. Golf, Crafter, Boxer, Audi, Honda, Hyundai, Vauxhall and Mercedes are all regulars.

Electronic steering locks: ESL, ELV and ESCL faults

Manufacturers replaced the mechanical column lock with a motorised electronic unit that talks to the rest of the vehicle. It is neater and more secure, but it introduces an electronic failure point where there was previously only a steel pin.

The consequence of an ESL failure is a car that will not start and a wheel that will not turn, often with a steering lock warning displayed. Fitting a replacement is only half the job — it then has to be matched to the vehicle electronically.

How to tell an ESL fault from a barrel fault

A mechanical barrel fault normally shows up in the key: it will not turn, or turns roughly. An electronic steering lock fault more often shows up as a dashboard warning, a wheel that stays locked while the key or start button behaves entirely normally, or a vehicle that cranks but refuses to release the column.

What to do right now if your key will not turn

Before anything else: stop turning it. Extra force is what breaks keys off inside barrels, and a broken key in the cylinder adds an extraction stage before any repair can even begin.

A few quick checks are worth running through. They sometimes resolve it, and they always narrow down what we need to bring.

• Relieve pressure on the column by rocking the wheel as you turn the key
• Check the gearbox is genuinely in Park, or the clutch pedal is on the floor
• Swap to the spare key if you have one — it isolates key wear from barrel wear
• Look closely at the key for wear, distortion or cracks
• Remove fobs, tags and other keys from the ring to take the weight off
• Do not use WD-40 or similar in the barrel; it makes matters worse, not better
• Do not attempt to extract a snapped key with tools

Mobile repair or recovery to a garage?

Transport is the most avoidable cost in an ignition fault. The work itself happens at the column and the lock, both of which are entirely accessible where the vehicle already stands.

No ramp, no lift, no pit. Ignition and column lock work is cabin work, and the programming equipment travels with us.

There are exceptions, and we will say so. Some faults need a part that has to be ordered, and a few need bench work. What we will not do is load the vehicle onto a truck before anyone has established what is actually wrong with it.

• New barrel supplied and fitted — with any coding the vehicle demands
• Key extraction — snapped or jammed keys removed with specialist tooling

• ESL / EIS replacement and coding — Mercedes-Benz and other supported makes
• Emulator programming — a durable option on the platforms that accept it

Every visit finishes with the ignition, steering lock and immobiliser tested together, and the work carries a parts and labour warranty.
