Mobile ignition, switch and steering lock specialists in Brixton
Ignition and steering lock faults are among the few problems that immobilise a vehicle completely while leaving almost no external clue as to the cause. Correct diagnosis before anything is replaced matters more here than on nearly any other job.
We would rather spend the first part of the visit finding out what is genuinely wrong than fitting a new barrel and hoping. It is the difference between fixing the fault and replacing a component that was never the problem.
A vehicle that will not start in Brixton is usually blocking something: a driveway, a loading bay or a parking space someone else is waiting for. On-site repair resolves it without a recovery truck in the way.
Why the fault needs identifying before anything is replaced
Four or five completely different faults present in almost exactly the same way. Barrel, switch, column lock, immobiliser and key wear all produce a vehicle that will not start. Working out which one it is, before ordering parts, is the part of the job that saves you money.
Ignition and steering lock services in Brixton
These are the jobs we attend for, almost always on site. Click any of them for the detail.
Ignition Barrel Replacement
Rebuilt to work with your existing key where possible, or replaced and programmed where it is not.
Steering Lock Repair
Column locks that will not release, diagnosed and repaired — mechanical pawls and electronic modules alike.
Mercedes ESL / EIS Work
Mercedes ESL and EIS work, including FBS3 and FBS4 systems, with programming carried out at the vehicle.
Broken Key Extraction
Keys snapped off flush in the cylinder removed cleanly, with the barrel assessed afterwards for reuse.
Ignition Switch Replacement
The electrical half of the ignition: traced properly when the barrel itself is mechanically sound.
ESL Emulator Programming
A programmed emulator as a durable alternative to a replacement module on supported platforms.
How a Brixton call-out actually runs
It is a simple sequence, and it always runs in this order.
Tell us what it is doing
Call or message with the make, model, registration and what the key or wheel is doing. That usually tells us which parts and programming to bring.
We come to the vehicle
We attend wherever it is standing. We attend anywhere in Brixton or the wider SW2 area. The location is your choice, because we bring everything with us.
Diagnose, then repair
We establish whether the fault is the barrel, the switch, the steering lock or the key, explain what we have found, and then rebuild, replace or programme as needed.
Test and hand back
We check the ignition, the steering lock release and the immobiliser all behave correctly before we leave, and the work is covered by a parts and labour warranty.
Covering Brixton and the SW2 area
Our Brixton work takes in Brixton town centre, Brixton Hill, Loughborough Junction, Tulse Hill and the SW2 residential streets.
Residential streets, retail parks and industrial units are all routine locations for this work. We have no workshop to bring the vehicle to, and that is the point. The repair happens where the vehicle already is, so recovery is usually avoidable entirely.
We are based at Greenhedges, Felcot Road, East Grinstead, West Sussex RH19 2QA, which puts Brixton comfortably within our regular working area.

Ignition and steering lock FAQs for Brixton
What Brixton customers ask first — barrel, switch, steering lock and nearby coverage.
Do you repair ignition barrels and steering locks in Brixton?
Yes. Mr Ignition is a mobile ignition barrel replacement and steering lock repair service covering Brixton (SW2) in London, including Brixton town centre. We diagnose at the vehicle — driveway, workplace, car park or roadside — from our East Grinstead base.
Is a locked steering wheel in Brixton the ignition barrel or the steering lock?
It can be either, so we diagnose rather than guess. A stiff or immovable key points at the barrel. A key that turns normally with a locked column or a dash warning points at steering lock repair or an electronic steering lock. The Knowledge Centre explains how those faults differ.
Can you extract a snapped key in Brixton?
Yes. broken key extraction is routine work in Brixton. Leave the broken section alone — an undisturbed barrel can often be saved. Forcing, drilling or hooking the fragment is what turns an extraction into a replacement.
Which towns near Brixton do you cover?
As well as Brixton we regularly cover Clapham, Balham and Crystal Palace. The same mobile visit covers ignition barrel replacement, ignition switch replacement and steering lock repair. See every live page on areas we cover.
Do you programme Ford, Mercedes and other electronic steering locks in Brixton?
Yes, on supported vehicles. That includes Mercedes ESL and EIS and ESL emulator programming for Ford, Renault, Nissan, BMW, MINI, Hyundai, Kia, Vauxhall and other listed makes. We confirm the lock at the vehicle in Brixton before any module or emulator is programmed.
Can my Brixton ignition barrel be rebuilt onto the existing key?
Often, yes — a rebuild is the first option we look at. It keeps your existing key and avoids immobiliser work. If the barrel is too far gone we replace it on supported cars and say so before starting. Related part references sit on the ignition barrel replacement page.
Is there a call-out fee for Brixton?
No call-out fee. You are quoted for the diagnosed repair, not for us arriving. Call or get in touch with the registration, the fault and the Brixton postcode.
Is ignition work in Brixton guaranteed?
Yes. Parts and labour are warranted. Before we leave Brixton we check the ignition, steering lock release and immobiliser together so the vehicle is confirmed as a system, not just at the repaired part.
Why ignition barrels fail, and what it feels like when they do
Barrels fail through ordinary mechanical wear. The wafers the key lifts wear down, the springs behind them lose tension, and decades-old grease hardens into a paste that resists movement rather than helping it.
Key condition matters more than most people expect. A worn blade sits slightly wrong in the barrel, loads the wafers unevenly, and quietly damages the lock a little more every time it is used.
Most people adapt to a failing ignition without really noticing — a particular angle, a particular wiggle. That adaptation is the warning, and it is the earliest point to intervene.
Vehicles we see this on most around Brixton
We see the full spread, but vans lead the way. A Transit or Relay used for deliveries might see fifty ignition cycles a day, against half a dozen for a commuter car — so the barrels wear out years sooner. Golf, Crafter, Boxer, Audi, Honda, Hyundai, Vauxhall and Mercedes are all regulars.
Electronic steering locks: ESL, ELV and ESCL faults
Electronic steering locks changed the failure picture considerably. The locking pin is driven by a small motor and gearbox, monitored electronically, and the vehicle refuses to start if it cannot confirm the pin has withdrawn.
Because the module lives inside the immobiliser system, you cannot simply swap in a used one from a breaker. It has to be programmed to the vehicle, and on some platforms an emulator is the more reliable long-term answer.
How to tell an ESL fault from a barrel fault
The distinction matters commercially as well as technically: one is a mechanical repair, the other involves programming. We establish which before anything is ordered.
What to do right now if your key will not turn
Before anything else: stop turning it. Extra force is what breaks keys off inside barrels, and a broken key in the cylinder adds an extraction stage before any repair can even begin.
Beyond that, a few checks are worth doing before you call, because they occasionally solve the problem outright and always help us bring the right parts.
- Take the load off the steering lock by moving the wheel gently while trying the key
- Verify Park is properly engaged, or hold the clutch fully down
- Use the spare key as a test — if it turns, the original key is the problem
- Examine the key for obvious wear or damage
- Reduce the keyring to the bare key and retry
- Keep lubricants out of the ignition barrel entirely
- Resist any DIY extraction of a broken key
If the key has already snapped
Best thing you can do is nothing. Extraction is a normal part of our work and the barrel is often reusable afterwards, but only if it has not been damaged in the meantime.
Mobile repair or recovery to a garage?
Recovery is money spent moving a problem rather than solving it. The diagnosis still has to happen, and it happens just as well on your driveway as on a workshop floor.
Ignition and steering lock work is well suited to being done on site. The components are reached from the steering column and the dash, not from underneath on a ramp, so a driveway or a car park space is a perfectly workable environment. Where programming is needed it is done at the vehicle with the equipment we carry.
We are not going to pretend everything is a one-visit fix. Occasionally a part has to come in, or a unit has to go on the bench. But that is a decision made after diagnosis, not before it.
What the work covers
After diagnosis, the job will be one of the following pieces of work.
- Barrel service and rebuild — the cheapest route where wear has not gone too far
- New barrel supplied and fitted — with any coding the vehicle demands
- Key extraction — snapped or jammed keys removed with specialist tooling
- Switch replacement — where the barrel turns but the electrics do not respond
- Column lock work — mechanical repair or electronic module replacement
- ESL / EIS replacement and coding — Mercedes-Benz and other supported makes
- Emulator programming — a durable option on the platforms that accept it
Nothing is called finished until the ignition turns, the wheel releases and the immobiliser is satisfied. The work comes with a parts and labour warranty.
