Why ignition barrels fail, and what it feels like when they do
An ignition barrel contains a set of sprung wafers or tumblers that the key lifts into alignment. Every single insertion wears both the key and those wafers very slightly. After years of use the tolerances open up, alignment becomes marginal, and the barrel starts needing persuasion.
Key condition matters more than most people expect. A worn blade sits slightly wrong in the barrel, loads the wafers unevenly, and quietly damages the lock a little more every time it is used.
If you have started thinking of it as a quirk rather than a fault, it is a fault. Barrels do not recover.

Because the module sits in the immobiliser chain, a replacement usually has to be programmed to the vehicle rather than simply bolted on. How to tell an ESL fault from a barrel fault
The tell is usually where the resistance is. Barrel faults are felt through the key. ESL faults are reported by the car — a warning message, a locked wheel, a refusal to start despite everything else appearing normal.
What to do right now if your key will not turn
Resist the urge to apply more force. Almost every snapped key we extract was snapped by somebody trying just a little harder, and extraction always has to happen before the underlying fault can be addressed.
Before ringing, run through the list below. Occasionally the answer is in there, and if not it still helps the diagnosis.
- Ease the steering wheel side to side while gently trying the key, in case the column is under load
- Confirm the selector is fully in Park, or the clutch is fully depressed on a manual
- Test the spare key — a working spare points at key wear, not barrel failure
- Inspect the blade for bends, wear ridges or a split head
- Strip the keyring down to just the key and try again
- Avoid penetrating oils and lubricant sprays; they trap dirt inside the cylinder
- Leave a broken key exactly where it is rather than attempting to pull it out
If the key has already snapped
Leave the broken section in place. It is far easier to extract a key that is sitting where it broke than one that has been driven deeper into the cylinder by attempts to remove it.
Mobile repair or recovery to a garage?
Recovery adds cost and delay without adding any diagnosis. The vehicle is loaded, transported, and then queued at a garage that may or may not have the specialist tooling for ignition and immobiliser work.
This is not work that needs a ramp. Everything is accessed from inside the cabin at the column and dashboard, which is why a parking space is as good as a workshop bay. Programming is carried out on site with the kit in the van.
