Specialist ignition and steering lock help in Ewell
The maddening part of an ignition fault is that everything else about the vehicle is perfectly fine. The engine is healthy, the battery is good, the keys are in your hand — and none of it counts for anything, because the barrel will not rotate.
We attend, diagnose properly, and where the parts and programming allow we finish the job in the same visit. If a part has to be ordered we say so up front rather than leaving the vehicle stripped and waiting.
Commuter parking around Ewell station and the town-centre multi-storeys is where a failed ignition becomes everyone else's problem. We repair it in the bay it occupies.
Why the fault needs identifying before anything is replaced
A key that will not turn, a wheel that will not release and a vehicle that will not start can all be caused by the ignition barrel, the ignition switch behind it, the steering lock, the immobiliser, or simply a worn key. The symptoms overlap almost entirely, so replacing the barrel on assumption is a common and expensive mistake.

How a Ewell call-out actually runs
Here is exactly how the job runs, step by step.
Describe the symptom
Ring or message with make, model, reg and exactly what happens when you turn the key. That shapes what we bring with us.
We attend on site
The vehicle stays where it is. We attend anywhere in Ewell or the wider KT17 area. On the driveway, at the kerb, or in a car park; it makes little difference to us.
Diagnosis, then the repair
We identify which component has actually failed, explain the options, and carry out the rebuild, replacement or programming that follows from it.
Tested, then handed over
Nothing is finished until the key turns, the wheel releases and the immobiliser is happy. Parts and labour warranty included.
Covering Ewell and the KT17 area
Our Ewell work takes in Ewell village centre, Ewell Court, Stoneleigh and the KT17 residential streets.
Station forecourts, town-centre bays and estate parking are all locations we attend as standard. Because we operate as a mobile service rather than from a workshop, there is no need to arrange recovery before you speak to us — in most cases the vehicle never has to move.
We are based at Greenhedges, Felcot Road, East Grinstead, West Sussex RH19 2QA, which puts Ewell comfortably within our regular working area.
Need this sorted today?
Force is the enemy here. Give us a call and describe the symptom rather than pushing harder. We cover Ewell and the KT17 area.
Ignition and steering lock FAQs for Ewell
What Ewell customers ask first — barrel, switch, steering lock and nearby coverage.
Do you repair ignition barrels and steering locks in Ewell?
Yes. Mr Ignition is a mobile ignition barrel replacement and steering lock repair service covering Ewell (KT17) in Surrey, including Ewell village centre. We diagnose at the vehicle — driveway, workplace, car park or roadside — from our East Grinstead base.
Is a locked steering wheel in Ewell the ignition barrel or the steering lock?
It can be either, so we diagnose rather than guess. A stiff or immovable key points at the barrel. A key that turns normally with a locked column or a dash warning points at steering lock repair or an electronic steering lock. The Knowledge Centre explains how those faults differ.
Can you extract a snapped key in Ewell?
Yes. broken key extraction is routine work in Ewell. Leave the broken section alone — an undisturbed barrel can often be saved. Forcing, drilling or hooking the fragment is what turns an extraction into a replacement.
Which towns near Ewell do you cover?
As well as Ewell we regularly cover East Ewell, Epsom and Banstead. The same mobile visit covers ignition barrel replacement, ignition switch replacement and steering lock repair. See every live page on areas we cover.
Do you programme Ford, Mercedes and other electronic steering locks in Ewell?
Yes, on supported vehicles. That includes Mercedes ESL and EIS and ESL emulator programming for Ford, Renault, Nissan, BMW, MINI, Hyundai, Kia, Vauxhall and other listed makes. We confirm the lock at the vehicle in Ewell before any module or emulator is programmed.
Can my Ewell ignition barrel be rebuilt onto the existing key?
Often, yes — a rebuild is the first option we look at. It keeps your existing key and avoids immobiliser work. If the barrel is too far gone we replace it on supported cars and say so before starting. Related part references sit on the ignition barrel replacement page.
Is there a call-out fee for Ewell?
No call-out fee. You are quoted for the diagnosed repair, not for us arriving. Call or get in touch with the registration, the fault and the Ewell postcode.
Is ignition work in Ewell guaranteed?
Yes. Parts and labour are warranted. Before we leave Ewell we check the ignition, steering lock release and immobiliser together so the vehicle is confirmed as a system, not just at the repaired part.
Why ignition barrels fail, and what it feels like when they do
A barrel is a precision lock doing a heavy-duty job. The wafers inside have to align within very fine tolerances, and every turn of the key erodes those tolerances a fraction further.
Duplicated keys compound the wear. Each copy is cut from the last, so tolerances drift, and a third-generation copy can be measurably off-profile while still appearing to work.
Nobody books a repair for a slightly stiff ignition, and that is understandable. But stiffness is the stage at which a rebuild is usually still possible, and a seized barrel is the stage at which it usually is not.
Vehicles we see this on most around Ewell
Ignition barrel wear is not brand-specific, but some platforms are noticeably more prone to it. Ford Transit and Transit Custom, Citroen Relay and Peugeot Boxer vans, Volkswagen Golf and Crafter, Vauxhall, Honda, Hyundai, Audi and Mercedes-Benz all come up regularly. Vans suffer worst, simply because the ignition is used far more times a day than on a private car.
Electronic steering locks: ESL, ELV and ESCL faults
On many vehicles from the mid-2000s onward the mechanical steering lock has been replaced by an electronic steering lock — ESL, ELV or ESCL depending on the manufacturer. Instead of a cable and pawl, a small motorised unit locks and releases the column electronically on start-up.
When one of these units fails it commonly fails locked, with a warning on the dash and a steering wheel that will not release. Because the module sits in the immobiliser chain, a replacement usually has to be programmed to the vehicle rather than simply bolted on. That is specialist work, and it is a large part of what we do.
How to tell an ESL fault from a barrel fault
The distinction matters commercially as well as technically: one is a mechanical repair, the other involves programming. We establish which before anything is ordered.
What to do right now if your key will not turn
Put the pliers down. Forcing a stiff barrel is how keys break, and a key broken off flush inside the cylinder is a materially harder and more expensive job than the original fault ever was.
Try the following first — some of these do resolve the problem, and all of them are useful information for us.
- Rock the steering wheel gently while turning the key — the column may be loaded against a kerb or at full lock
- Make sure the vehicle is properly in Park, or in gear with the clutch down on a manual
- Try your spare key; if the spare works, the fault is the key rather than the barrel
- Check the key for visible wear, bending or a cracked plastic head
- Take heavy items off the keyring — weight on the barrel causes and worsens this fault
- Do not spray oil or lubricant into the barrel; it collects grit and makes the eventual repair harder
- Never lever or drill at a snapped key — extraction is far easier before anyone has dug at it
If the key has already snapped
Leave it exactly as it is and call us. Broken key extraction is routine work when the barrel has been left alone, and the lock very often survives to be reused. Once somebody has attempted a DIY extraction, the barrel usually has to be replaced instead.
Mobile repair or recovery to a garage?
Getting the vehicle to a garage means paying for transport before anyone has even identified the fault, then waiting for a workshop slot behind jobs that were booked in advance.
This is not work that needs a ramp. Everything is accessed from inside the cabin at the column and dashboard, which is why a parking space is as good as a workshop bay. Programming is carried out on site with the kit in the van.
We are not going to pretend everything is a one-visit fix. Occasionally a part has to come in, or a unit has to go on the bench. But that is a decision made after diagnosis, not before it.
What the work covers
Once we know what has failed, the work falls into one of these categories.
- Rebuilding the existing barrel — new internals, same key, no reprogramming needed
- Fitting a replacement barrel — supplied and programmed to the vehicle as required
- Extracting a snapped key — removal, then an assessment of whether the lock survived
- Replacing the ignition switch — the electrical half, when the mechanical half is sound
- Repairing or replacing the steering lock — both mechanical pawls and electronic modules
- Programming ESL and EIS units — including Mercedes-Benz systems
- Programming an ESL emulator — where the vehicle supports it as a long-term fix
Nothing is called finished until the ignition turns, the wheel releases and the immobiliser is satisfied. The work comes with a parts and labour warranty.
