Mercedes C-Class ESL programming, Epsom
Mercedes C-Class steering lock programmed at the vehicle.
Key will not turn, or the steering stays locked in Epsom? We come to the vehicle and repair it where it stands.
No call-out fee · Fixed price before we start · 24/7
Most ignition problems build up quietly. The key needs jiggling, then needs holding at a particular angle, then one morning does nothing whatsoever. By the time it fails outright the vehicle is immobile, which is exactly why a mobile repair tends to be both faster and cheaper.
The visit begins with diagnosis, not with a quote for a replacement. Getting that first step right is what decides whether the job turns out to be a rebuild, a switch, an emulator or a full replacement.
Epsom has plenty of workplace and retail parking, which is where a good share of our call-outs happen. It is far easier to attend than to arrange recovery out of a busy car park.
Because the symptoms of a worn barrel, a failed switch and a jammed column lock are so similar, guesswork is expensive. We test to establish which component has actually failed rather than fitting the most likely candidate and seeing what happens.
Everything below is carried out at the vehicle wherever it is practical to do so. Follow any service for the full detail.
Worn, seized or damaged ignition barrels replaced or rebuilt on site, so the key turns properly again.
Diagnosis and repair of mechanical and electronic steering lock faults that stop the wheel releasing.
Specialist Mercedes-Benz electronic steering lock and ignition switch repair, replacement and programming.
Snapped or jammed keys removed from the barrel with specialist tools, without wrecking the lock.
Electrical ignition switch faults traced and replaced where the barrel turns but nothing happens.
Programmed emulator solutions for supported Mercedes, BMW, Ford, Nissan, Renault, Peugeot and Citroen systems.
Here is exactly how the job runs, step by step.
Call or message with the make, model, registration and what the key or wheel is doing. That usually tells us which parts and programming to bring.
We attend wherever it is standing. We attend anywhere in Epsom or the wider KT17 and KT19 area. Anywhere the vehicle has come to rest is somewhere we can work.
We establish whether the fault is the barrel, the switch, the steering lock or the key, explain what we have found, and then rebuild, replace or programme as needed.
We check the ignition, the steering lock release and the immobiliser all behave correctly before we leave, and the work is covered by a parts and labour warranty.
Our Epsom work takes in Epsom town centre, Epsom Downs, Langley Vale, Stamford Green and the KT19 estates.
Home, work or wherever it has stopped — car parks and driveways are equally straightforward. No workshop, no ramp, no queue. The vehicle stays where it is and we come to it.
We are based at Greenhedges, Felcot Road, East Grinstead, West Sussex RH19 2QA, which puts Epsom comfortably within our regular working area.
Do not force the key — that is how keys snap off inside the barrel. Call us and describe what is happening instead. We cover Epsom and the KT17 and KT19 area.
What Epsom customers ask first — barrel, switch, steering lock and nearby coverage.
Yes. Mr Ignition is a mobile ignition barrel replacement and steering lock repair service covering Epsom (KT17 and KT19) in Surrey, including Epsom town centre. We diagnose at the vehicle — driveway, workplace, car park or roadside — from our East Grinstead base.
It can be either, so we diagnose rather than guess. A stiff or immovable key points at the barrel. A key that turns normally with a locked column or a dash warning points at steering lock repair or an electronic steering lock. The Knowledge Centre explains how those faults differ.
Yes. broken key extraction is routine work in Epsom. Leave the broken section alone — an undisturbed barrel can often be saved. Forcing, drilling or hooking the fragment is what turns an extraction into a replacement.
As well as Epsom we regularly cover Ewell, East Ewell and Banstead. The same mobile visit covers ignition barrel replacement, ignition switch replacement and steering lock repair. See every live page on areas we cover.
Yes, on supported vehicles. That includes Mercedes ESL and EIS and ESL emulator programming for Ford, Renault, Nissan, BMW, MINI, Hyundai, Kia, Vauxhall and other listed makes. We confirm the lock at the vehicle in Epsom before any module or emulator is programmed.
Often, yes — a rebuild is the first option we look at. It keeps your existing key and avoids immobiliser work. If the barrel is too far gone we replace it on supported cars and say so before starting. Related part references sit on the ignition barrel replacement page.
No call-out fee. You are quoted for the diagnosed repair, not for us arriving. Call or get in touch with the registration, the fault and the Epsom postcode.
Yes. Parts and labour are warranted. Before we leave Epsom we check the ignition, steering lock release and immobiliser together so the vehicle is confirmed as a system, not just at the repaired part.
Inside the barrel, small sprung components must line up precisely before the cylinder can rotate at all. Metal wears, springs weaken, and old lubricant dries out and turns gummy. Once alignment is marginal the barrel becomes unpredictable.
The key and the lock wear as a pair, which is why fitting a new barrel to an old worn key sometimes solves nothing. Both halves have to be assessed together.
Most people adapt to a failing ignition without really noticing — a particular angle, a particular wiggle. That adaptation is the warning, and it is the cheapest point to intervene.
Ignition barrel wear is not brand-specific, but some platforms are noticeably more prone to it. Ford Transit and Transit Custom, Citroen Relay and Peugeot Boxer vans, Volkswagen Golf and Crafter, Vauxhall, Honda, Hyundai, Audi and Mercedes-Benz all come up regularly. Vans suffer worst, simply because the ignition is used far more times a day than on a private car.
Where an older car had a steel pawl and a cable, a modern one has a motorised module clamped to the column. It is a sealed electronic assembly, and when it fails it usually fails in the locked position.
When one of these units fails it commonly fails locked, with a warning on the dash and a steering wheel that will not release. Because the module sits in the immobiliser chain, a replacement usually has to be programmed to the vehicle rather than simply bolted on. That is specialist work, and it is a large part of what we do.
Barrel or ESL is usually settled in the first few minutes. A barrel problem resists the key. An ESL problem leaves the key working fine while the vehicle itself refuses to co-operate.
Put the pliers down. Forcing a stiff barrel is how keys break, and a key broken off flush inside the cylinder is a materially harder and more expensive job than the original fault ever was.
These are worth two minutes of your time before you call us out.
Leave the broken section in place. It is far easier to extract a key that is sitting where it broke than one that has been driven deeper into the cylinder by attempts to remove it.
Loading the vehicle onto a truck changes its postcode, not its fault. And it puts you at the back of a queue at a garage that may then look for an ignition specialist anyway.
The job happens in the driver's footwell and around the column, so lifting the vehicle is irrelevant. That is the reason mobile ignition work is practical at all, and why we can programme modules at the kerbside.
There are exceptions, and we will say so. Some faults need a part that has to be ordered, and a few need bench work. What we will not do is load the vehicle onto a truck before anyone has established what is actually wrong with it.
After diagnosis, the job will be one of the following pieces of work.
Every visit finishes with the ignition, steering lock and immobiliser tested together, and the work carries a parts and labour warranty.
Our coverage runs well beyond this one town. If the vehicle is nearer any of the following, go straight there.
Not on the list above? We also cover the wider Surrey area, plus Sussex, Kent, Berkshire, Essex and London — see every area we cover, browse all our services, or read the Knowledge Centre for fault guides.
