On-site ignition barrel and steering lock work in Esher

Nobody plans for an ignition failure. There is no warning light for a worn barrel and no service interval that catches it. It simply works, then works less well, then stops — and the vehicle is stuck wherever it was last parked.

We attend, diagnose properly, and where the parts and programming allow we finish the job in the same visit. If a part has to be ordered we say so up front rather than leaving the vehicle stripped and waiting.

Much of our Esher work is trade vehicles and daily drivers — the sort of vehicle that has to be working tomorrow morning, which is why we aim to finish on the first visit.

Why the fault needs identifying before anything is replaced

Four or five completely different faults present in almost exactly the same way. Barrel, switch, column lock, immobiliser and key wear all produce a vehicle that will not start. Working out which one it is, before ordering parts, is the part of the job that saves you money.

What people ring us about

These are the complaints we are called out for most often. Several of them get worse quickly if ignored.

  • Key turns roughly, or needs both hands
  • Ignition will not move past the accessory position
  • Key sheared off flush with the barrel face
  • Key jammed in and cannot be withdrawn
  • Steering wheel refuses to unlock
  • Electronic steering lock warning on the instrument panel
  • Barrel rotates but nothing powers up
  • Engine dies when the steering wheel is moved

How It Works

How a Esher call-out actually runs

From your first message to a working key, the job breaks down into four steps.

1

Give us the details

A quick call or WhatsApp with the vehicle, the registration and the symptom is usually enough for us to load the right parts and programming kit.

2

We travel to you

No recovery required — we work at the vehicle. We attend anywhere in Esher or the wider KT10 area. We work where the vehicle is, not where it would be convenient for a workshop.

3

Find the fault, fix the fault

Diagnosis first: barrel, switch, column lock or key. We tell you what we have found and what it needs before we start replacing anything.

4

Full check before we go

Ignition, column lock release and immobiliser are all tested together, and everything we fit carries a parts and labour warranty.

Covering Esher and the KT10 area

Our Esher work takes in Esher town centre, Hersham, West End, Claremont and the KT10 residential streets.

Whether the vehicle is at home, at work or stranded on a verge, we can carry out the repair there. There is no depot to get the vehicle to. We come out, diagnose and in most cases repair it where it stands.

We are based at Greenhedges, Felcot Road, East Grinstead, West Sussex RH19 2QA, which puts Esher comfortably within our regular working area.

Nearby coverage

Alongside Esher we regularly attend Claygate, Thames Ditton, Oxshott, Weybridge, Leatherhead and Epsom.

Why ignition barrels fail, and what it feels like when they do

An ignition barrel contains a set of sprung wafers or tumblers that the key lifts into alignment. Every single insertion wears both the key and those wafers very slightly. After years of use the tolerances open up, alignment becomes marginal, and the barrel starts needing persuasion.

Weight on the keyring is a badly underrated cause. A heavy bunch of keys hanging from the ignition applies constant leverage to both the barrel and the switch behind it, wearing out both prematurely.

There is a window between "a bit awkward" and "will not move", and it is worth acting inside it. Once the cylinder seizes outright, the options narrow and the cost rises.

Vehicles we see this on most around Esher

The list is predictable once you look at usage rather than badge. Delivery vans and trade vehicles first — Transit, Custom, Relay, Boxer, Crafter — then the high-volume cars: Golf, Audi, Vauxhall, Honda, Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz.

Electronic steering locks: ESL, ELV and ESCL faults

Newer vehicles do not use a mechanical lock on the column at all. An electronic steering lock module drives a pin in and out under software control, and reports back to the vehicle that it has done so.

An ESL failure is not something a general garage can usually resolve by fitting a part. The module must be programmed into the vehicle's security system, and on supported cars an emulator programmed to the original data is often the better route.

How to tell an ESL fault from a barrel fault

If the key feels wrong, suspect the barrel. If the key feels completely normal but the car will not release the wheel or start, suspect the electronic lock. Getting this right at the roadside is what stops the wrong part being fitted.

What to do right now if your key will not turn

Before anything else: stop turning it. Extra force is what breaks keys off inside barrels, and a broken key in the cylinder adds an extraction stage before any repair can even begin.

A few quick checks are worth running through. They sometimes resolve it, and they always narrow down what we need to bring.

  • Relieve pressure on the column by rocking the wheel as you turn the key
  • Check the gearbox is genuinely in Park, or the clutch pedal is on the floor
  • Swap to the spare key if you have one — it isolates key wear from barrel wear
  • Look closely at the key for wear, distortion or cracks
  • Remove fobs, tags and other keys from the ring to take the weight off
  • Do not use WD-40 or similar in the barrel; it makes matters worse, not better
  • Do not attempt to extract a snapped key with tools

If the key has already snapped

Do not touch it. Extraction from an undisturbed barrel is straightforward and the lock frequently survives. Extraction after somebody has been at it with pliers or a drill usually means a new barrel and new programming.

Mobile repair or recovery to a garage?

Recovery is money spent moving a problem rather than solving it. The diagnosis still has to happen, and it happens just as well on your driveway as on a workshop floor.

Ignition and steering lock work is well suited to being done on site. The components are reached from the steering column and the dash, not from underneath on a ramp, so a driveway or a car park space is a perfectly workable environment. Where programming is needed it is done at the vehicle with the equipment we carry.

Some faults do need more than a single visit. Where that is the case we say so clearly and explain why, rather than leaving the vehicle in pieces while something is chased up.

What the work covers

What actually gets done depends entirely on the diagnosis. The realistic options are these.

  • Barrel rebuild — worn wafers and springs replaced so the original key works again
  • Barrel replacement — a new lock fitted, with key or immobiliser programming where required
  • Broken key extraction — the snapped section removed and the barrel assessed
  • Ignition switch replacement — for the electrical fault behind a barrel that turns normally
  • Steering lock repair or replacement — mechanical and electronic column locks
  • ESL / EIS programming — replacement modules matched to the vehicle, Mercedes included
  • ESL emulator programming — a programmed alternative on supported platforms

The final step is always a full functional check of ignition, steering lock and immobiliser, and the job carries a parts and labour warranty.

Common Questions

Ignition and steering lock FAQs for Esher

The questions we are asked most often by customers in this area.

My key turns but the vehicle will not start. Is that still an ignition fault?

Quite possibly. A barrel that turns freely while nothing powers up usually points at the electrical switch behind it. The immobiliser and the column lock are the other candidates, which is why this one needs testing rather than assuming.

Do you work on vans, campervans and horse boxes?

Yes. Vans, campervans and horse box conversions are routine for us — often with worn barrels on low mileage, because it is the number of ignition cycles that does the damage rather than the miles.

Can I get a quote over the phone?

We can usually give you a realistic idea once we know the make, model, year and exactly what the vehicle is doing. What we will not do is commit to a firm figure for a fault nobody has looked at, because the same symptom can mean a rebuild or a programmed replacement.

Do you come out to Esher, or do I bring the vehicle to you?

You do not need to bring it anywhere. We attend Esher and the KT10 area as standard, working at the vehicle on a driveway, in a car park or at the roadside.

My key will not turn in the ignition. What should I do first?

Stop forcing it. Continued force is the most common cause of a key snapping off inside the barrel, which adds an extraction job before the actual fault can be repaired. Check the steering wheel is not under load against a kerb, try your spare key if you have one, then call us with the make, model and registration.

Can the ignition barrel be repaired rather than replaced?

Frequently it can. A rebuild replaces the worn internals while keeping your original key, which is usually the cheaper route and avoids any reprogramming. It depends on how far the wear has gone, so we assess the barrel before recommending anything.

How quickly can you get to Esher?

Realistically it depends on workload and where exactly you are in KT10. We are based at East Grinstead, so travel is not the issue — availability is. Call and we will give you a straight answer on the day.

Do you handle electronic steering lock and Mercedes ESL faults?

Yes, that is a large part of our work. We diagnose, repair, replace and programme electronic steering lock and electronic ignition switch systems on supported vehicles, including Mercedes-Benz ESL and EIS units. Where the platform supports it, a correctly programmed emulator can be a durable alternative to a replacement module.

Can you get a snapped key out of the barrel?

Yes, we do this regularly and carry the tooling for it. The important thing is to leave the broken section alone — an undisturbed barrel usually survives extraction, whereas one that has been drilled or levered at generally needs replacing.
