Specialist ignition and steering lock help in Shoreham-by-Sea

Most ignition problems build up quietly. The key needs jiggling, then needs holding at a particular angle, then one morning does nothing whatsoever. By the time it fails outright the vehicle is immobile, which is exactly why a mobile repair tends to be both faster and cheaper.

Our approach is to diagnose first and replace only what has actually failed. That distinction matters, because a steering lock fault and a barrel fault produce very similar symptoms while needing completely different work.

Seafront and promenade parking means long spells in salt-laden air. That accelerates wear inside the barrel and makes a stiff ignition rather more likely than it would be further inland.

Why the fault needs identifying before anything is replaced

You cannot tell a barrel fault from a switch fault or a column lock fault by the symptom alone — they all end with a vehicle that will not go. Establishing which it is comes first, always.

Common warning signs

Recognise any of these? Most of them are early warnings rather than final failures.

  • Key turns roughly, or needs both hands
  • Ignition will not move past the accessory position
  • Key sheared off flush with the barrel face
  • Key jammed in and cannot be withdrawn
  • Steering wheel refuses to unlock
  • Electronic steering lock warning on the instrument panel
  • Barrel rotates but nothing powers up
  • Engine dies when the steering wheel is moved

How It Works

How a Shoreham-by-Sea call-out actually runs

No mystery and no surprises. Four straightforward stages from the first call to a working ignition.

1

Tell us what it is doing

Call or message with the make, model, registration and what the key or wheel is doing. That usually tells us which parts and programming to bring.

2

We come to the vehicle

We attend wherever it is standing. We attend anywhere in Shoreham-by-Sea or the wider BN43 area. At home, at work or at the roadside — all the same to us.

3

Diagnose, then repair

We establish whether the fault is the barrel, the switch, the steering lock or the key, explain what we have found, and then rebuild, replace or programme as needed.

4

Test and hand back

We check the ignition, the steering lock release and the immobiliser all behave correctly before we leave, and the work is covered by a parts and labour warranty.

Why ignition barrels fail, and what it feels like when they do

Think of it as a lock that gets picked correctly several times a day for fifteen years. The wearing surfaces inside are tiny, they are under spring pressure constantly, and eventually they no longer line up as designed.

The key and the lock wear as a pair, which is why fitting a new barrel to an old worn key sometimes solves nothing. Both halves have to be assessed together.

There is a window between "a bit awkward" and "will not move", and it is worth acting inside it. Once the cylinder seizes outright, the options narrow and the cost rises.

Vehicles we see this on most around Shoreham-by-Sea

Ignition barrel wear is not brand-specific, but some platforms are noticeably more prone to it. Ford Transit and Transit Custom, Citroen Relay and Peugeot Boxer vans, Volkswagen Golf and Crafter, Vauxhall, Honda, Hyundai, Audi and Mercedes-Benz all come up regularly. Vans suffer worst, simply because the ignition is used far more times a day than on a private car.

Electronic steering locks: ESL, ELV and ESCL faults

On many vehicles from the mid-2000s onward the mechanical steering lock has been replaced by an electronic steering lock — ESL, ELV or ESCL depending on the manufacturer. Instead of a cable and pawl, a small motorised unit locks and releases the column electronically on start-up.

When one of these units fails it commonly fails locked, with a warning on the dash and a steering wheel that will not release. Because the module sits in the immobiliser chain, a replacement usually has to be programmed to the vehicle rather than simply bolted on. That is specialist work, and it is a large part of what we do.

How to tell an ESL fault from a barrel fault

Barrel or ESL is usually settled in the first few minutes. A barrel problem resists the key. An ESL problem leaves the key working fine while the vehicle itself refuses to co-operate.

What to do right now if your key will not turn

The single most useful thing you can do is stop forcing it. A key being forced in a stiff barrel is the most common way a bad situation becomes an expensive one, because a snapped key inside the cylinder turns a straightforward repair into an extraction job first.

There are a handful of things worth trying first. Now and again one of them fixes it, and either way it tells us more about the fault.

  • Ease the steering wheel side to side while gently trying the key, in case the column is under load
  • Confirm the selector is fully in Park, or the clutch is fully depressed on a manual
  • Test the spare key — a working spare points at key wear, not barrel failure
  • Inspect the blade for bends, wear ridges or a split head
  • Strip the keyring down to just the key and try again
  • Avoid penetrating oils and lubricant sprays; they trap dirt inside the cylinder
  • Leave a broken key exactly where it is rather than attempting to pull it out

If the key has already snapped

Leave the broken section in place. It is far easier to extract a key that is sitting where it broke than one that has been driven deeper into the cylinder by attempts to remove it.

Mobile repair or recovery to a garage?

Recovery is money spent moving a problem rather than solving it. The diagnosis still has to happen, and it happens just as well on your driveway as on a workshop floor.

Ignition and steering lock work is well suited to being done on site. The components are reached from the steering column and the dash, not from underneath on a ramp, so a driveway or a car park space is a perfectly workable environment. Where programming is needed it is done at the vehicle with the equipment we carry.

There are exceptions, and we will say so. Some faults need a part that has to be ordered, and a few need bench work. What we will not do is load the vehicle onto a truck before anyone has established what is actually wrong with it.

What the work covers

Depending on what the diagnosis shows, the job could be any of the following.

  • Barrel rebuild — worn wafers and springs replaced so the original key works again
  • Barrel replacement — a new lock fitted, with key or immobiliser programming where required
  • Broken key extraction — the snapped section removed and the barrel assessed
  • Ignition switch replacement — for the electrical fault behind a barrel that turns normally
  • Steering lock repair or replacement — mechanical and electronic column locks
  • ESL / EIS programming — replacement modules matched to the vehicle, Mercedes included
  • ESL emulator programming — a programmed alternative on supported platforms

Nothing is called finished until the ignition turns, the wheel releases and the immobiliser is satisfied. The work comes with a parts and labour warranty.

Common Questions

Ignition and steering lock FAQs for Shoreham-by-Sea

The questions we field most days, answered plainly.

Do you handle electronic steering lock and Mercedes ESL faults?

Yes, that is a large part of our work. We diagnose, repair, replace and programme electronic steering lock and electronic ignition switch systems on supported vehicles, including Mercedes-Benz ESL and EIS units. Where the platform supports it, a correctly programmed emulator can be a durable alternative to a replacement module.

Can you get a snapped key out of the barrel?

Yes, we do this regularly and carry the tooling for it. The important thing is to leave the broken section alone — an undisturbed barrel usually survives extraction, whereas one that has been drilled or levered at generally needs replacing.

Will a repair affect my immobiliser or mean new keys?

Possibly. Rebuilding around your existing key avoids the issue entirely. Fitting new components often means programming so the immobiliser accepts them — we confirm which applies once we have diagnosed the fault.

Which other areas near Shoreham-by-Sea do you cover?

As well as Shoreham-by-Sea we regularly cover Worthing, Hove and Brighton, plus the wider West Sussex area, then Surrey, Kent, Berkshire, Essex and London. If you are unsure whether you are in range, call with your postcode and we will confirm.

Is there a call-out charge?

We do not charge a call-out fee. The price is for the repair, quoted once the fault has been diagnosed — not a fee for arriving and then a second figure for the work.

Is the work guaranteed?

Yes, there is a parts and labour warranty on what we fit, and every job ends with a functional check of the ignition, steering lock and immobiliser together.

The steering wheel is locked solid. Is that the ignition or the steering lock?

Both faults produce a locked wheel, so it needs diagnosing rather than guessing. A rough or immovable key suggests the barrel; a normal-feeling key with a locked column and a dash warning suggests an electronic steering lock fault.

My key turns but the vehicle will not start. Is that still an ignition fault?

Yes, and this is a good example of why diagnosis matters. The mechanical half is clearly working, so attention moves to the ignition switch, the immobiliser or the steering lock.

Do you work on vans, campervans and horse boxes?

Yes, and they make up a lot of our work. Ford Transit and Transit Custom, Citroen Relay, Peugeot Boxer and Volkswagen Crafter barrels wear out sooner than car barrels simply because the ignition is used far more times a day. Converted campervans and horse boxes on van platforms are covered too.
