Why ignition barrels fail, and what it feels like when they do
Think of it as a lock that gets picked correctly several times a day for fifteen years. The wearing surfaces inside are tiny, they are under spring pressure constantly, and eventually they no longer line up as designed.
Keys are half the problem. A bent, worn or badly cut duplicate loads the wafers unevenly and wears them faster. This is precisely why a key can still open the doors while failing to turn the ignition.
The early warning signs are subtle and easy to live with, which is exactly why so many barrels get driven until they seize completely. If your key already needs a particular knack, the barrel is telling you something.

On many vehicles from the mid-2000s onward the mechanical steering lock has been replaced by an electronic steering lock — ESL, ELV or ESCL depending on the manufacturer. Instead of a cable and pawl, a small motorised unit locks and releases the column electronically on start-up.
The consequence of an ESL failure is a car that will not start and a wheel that will not turn, often with a steering lock warning displayed. Fitting a replacement is only half the job — it then has to be matched to the vehicle electronically.
How to tell an ESL fault from a barrel fault
Barrel or ESL is usually settled in the first few minutes. A barrel problem resists the key. An ESL problem leaves the key working fine while the vehicle itself refuses to co-operate.
What to do right now if your key will not turn
Put the pliers down. Forcing a stiff barrel is how keys break, and a key broken off flush inside the cylinder is a materially harder and more expensive job than the original fault ever was.
Before ringing, run through the list below. Occasionally the answer is in there, and if not it still helps the diagnosis.
- Take the load off the steering lock by moving the wheel gently while trying the key
- Verify Park is properly engaged, or hold the clutch fully down
- Use the spare key as a test — if it turns, the original key is the problem
- Examine the key for obvious wear or damage
- Reduce the keyring to the bare key and retry
- Keep lubricants out of the ignition barrel entirely
- Resist any DIY extraction of a broken key
If the key has already snapped
Leave it exactly as it is and call us. Broken key extraction is routine work when the barrel has been left alone, and the lock very often survives to be reused. Once somebody has attempted a DIY extraction, the barrel usually has to be replaced instead.
