Mobile ignition and steering lock repair in Littlehampton

Nobody plans for an ignition failure. There is no warning light for a worn barrel and no service interval that catches it. It simply works, then works less well, then stops — and the vehicle is stuck wherever it was last parked.

We would rather spend the first part of the visit finding out what is genuinely wrong than fitting a new barrel and hoping. It is the difference between fixing the fault and replacing a component that was never the problem.

Being on the coast matters more than people realise for lock wear. Damp, salty air works its way into the cylinder and hardens the grease that is supposed to keep it moving freely.

Why the fault needs identifying before anything is replaced

Identical symptoms, different causes. That is why we diagnose on arrival instead of quoting for a barrel over the phone. Sometimes the barrel is fine and the fault is behind it; occasionally the fault is the key in your hand.

Common warning signs

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth a call before the situation gets any worse.

  • Have developed a knack for getting the key to turn
  • Barrel seized completely with the key inserted
  • Snapped key, with part of it left in the lock
  • Key trapped in the ignition and will not release
  • Column lock will not disengage when starting
  • ESL, ELV or ESCL fault reported by the vehicle
  • Cylinder turns loosely with no resistance at all
  • Starting is hit and miss with no obvious pattern

How It Works

How a Littlehampton call-out actually runs

Four stages, and you know what is happening at each one.

1

Tell us what it is doing

Call or message with the make, model, registration and what the key or wheel is doing. That usually tells us which parts and programming to bring.

2

We come to the vehicle

We attend wherever it is standing. We attend anywhere in Littlehampton or the wider BN17 area. Home, work, roadside or car park — wherever it is standing.

3

Diagnose, then repair

We establish whether the fault is the barrel, the switch, the steering lock or the key, explain what we have found, and then rebuild, replace or programme as needed.

4

Test and hand back

We check the ignition, the steering lock release and the immobiliser all behave correctly before we leave, and the work is covered by a parts and labour warranty.

Why ignition barrels fail, and what it feels like when they do

An ignition barrel contains a set of sprung wafers or tumblers that the key lifts into alignment. Every single insertion wears both the key and those wafers very slightly. After years of use the tolerances open up, alignment becomes marginal, and the barrel starts needing persuasion.

A worn key accelerates all of this. A key carried loose in a pocket for a decade, or copied from a copy, no longer matches the profile the barrel expects. It may still work the doors and fail in the ignition, because the ignition is the lock that takes the most load.

Most people adapt to a failing ignition without really noticing — a particular angle, a particular wiggle. That adaptation is the warning, and it is the cheapest point to intervene.

Vehicles we see this on most around Littlehampton

The list is predictable once you look at usage rather than badge. Delivery vans and trade vehicles first — Transit, Custom, Relay, Boxer, Crafter — then the high-volume cars: Golf, Audi, Vauxhall, Honda, Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz.

Electronic steering locks: ESL, ELV and ESCL faults

Where an older car had a steel pawl and a cable, a modern one has a motorised module clamped to the column. It is a sealed electronic assembly, and when it fails it usually fails in the locked position.

A failed ESL typically leaves the column locked and the vehicle immobilised. Replacement parts are coded to the car, so the work involves programming as well as fitting. Where the platform supports it, a properly programmed emulator is a durable alternative.

How to tell an ESL fault from a barrel fault

A mechanical barrel fault normally shows up in the key: it will not turn, or turns roughly. An electronic steering lock fault more often shows up as a dashboard warning, a wheel that stays locked while the key or start button behaves entirely normally, or a vehicle that cranks but refuses to release the column.

What to do right now if your key will not turn

The single most useful thing you can do is stop forcing it. A key being forced in a stiff barrel is the most common way a bad situation becomes an expensive one, because a snapped key inside the cylinder turns a straightforward repair into an extraction job first.

Beyond that, a few checks are worth doing before you call, because they occasionally solve the problem outright and always help us bring the right parts.

  • Relieve pressure on the column by rocking the wheel as you turn the key
  • Check the gearbox is genuinely in Park, or the clutch pedal is on the floor
  • Swap to the spare key if you have one — it isolates key wear from barrel wear
  • Look closely at the key for wear, distortion or cracks
  • Remove fobs, tags and other keys from the ring to take the weight off
  • Do not use WD-40 or similar in the barrel; it makes matters worse, not better
  • Do not attempt to extract a snapped key with tools

If the key has already snapped

Leave the broken section in place. It is far easier to extract a key that is sitting where it broke than one that has been driven deeper into the cylinder by attempts to remove it.

Mobile repair or recovery to a garage?

Recovery is money spent moving a problem rather than solving it. The diagnosis still has to happen, and it happens just as well on your driveway as on a workshop floor.

This is not work that needs a ramp. Everything is accessed from inside the cabin at the column and dashboard, which is why a parking space is as good as a workshop bay. Programming is carried out on site with the kit in the van.

There are exceptions, and we will say so. Some faults need a part that has to be ordered, and a few need bench work. What we will not do is load the vehicle onto a truck before anyone has established what is actually wrong with it.

What the work covers

Depending on what the diagnosis shows, the job could be any of the following.

  • Rebuilding the existing barrel — new internals, same key, no reprogramming needed
  • Fitting a replacement barrel — supplied and programmed to the vehicle as required
  • Extracting a snapped key — removal, then an assessment of whether the lock survived
  • Replacing the ignition switch — the electrical half, when the mechanical half is sound
  • Repairing or replacing the steering lock — both mechanical pawls and electronic modules
  • Programming ESL and EIS units — including Mercedes-Benz systems
  • Programming an ESL emulator — where the vehicle supports it as a long-term fix

In all cases the vehicle is checked as a whole — key, barrel, column lock and immobiliser — before we sign off, backed by a parts and labour warranty.

Common Questions

Ignition and steering lock FAQs for Littlehampton

What customers around here usually ask us first.

Can the ignition barrel be repaired rather than replaced?

Often, yes. Where the barrel is worn rather than destroyed we can frequently rebuild it to work with your existing key, which avoids the cost of a new lock and the need to re-key or reprogram. Whether that is possible depends on the vehicle and the condition of the parts, which is why we diagnose before quoting.

How quickly can you get to Littlehampton?

That varies with the day and how busy we already are. Littlehampton is comfortably inside our regular patch from our East Grinstead base, and same-day is often achievable. Rather than quote a time we cannot hold to, call and we will tell you what is realistic.

Do you handle electronic steering lock and Mercedes ESL faults?

We do, and it is a significant share of what we are called for. Mercedes ESL and EIS systems, plus electronic column locks on other makes, including the programming side rather than just fitting parts.

Can you get a snapped key out of the barrel?

Yes. Broken key extraction is a routine job for us and we carry specialist tools for it. In many cases the barrel survives the extraction and only needs servicing rather than replacing, provided nobody has attempted to dig the key out first.

Will a repair affect my immobiliser or mean new keys?

It depends on the route the repair takes. Rebuilds normally keep your original key and need no programming at all. New barrels and electronic modules usually do need coding to the vehicle. You will know which before we begin.

Which other areas near Littlehampton do you cover?

Our coverage takes in Worthing, Shoreham-by-Sea and Hove, the surrounding West Sussex area, and onward into Surrey, Kent, Berkshire, Essex and London. Not sure? Call with the postcode.

Is there a call-out charge?

No. There is no call-out charge for attending. You are quoted for the work itself once we have seen the vehicle and established what has actually failed, rather than paying separately just for us to turn up.

Is the work guaranteed?

It is — parts and labour are both covered. Before we finish we check the ignition turns, the column releases and the immobiliser is satisfied, so nothing is signed off on assumption.

The steering wheel is locked solid. Is that the ignition or the steering lock?

Either is possible. The distinction usually comes down to whether the key feels normal. Key trouble points at the barrel; a healthy key with a column that will not free off points at the steering lock.
