On-site ignition barrel and steering lock work in Hove
Ignition faults rarely give much warning. A barrel that felt slightly stiff for a few weeks becomes a barrel that will not move at all, usually at the least convenient moment. Because the vehicle cannot then be driven, the default assumption is recovery to a garage — and that is very often unnecessary.
Our approach is to diagnose first and replace only what has actually failed. That distinction matters, because a steering lock fault and a barrel fault produce very similar symptoms while needing completely different work.
Living near the sea shortens the life of anything mechanical that is exposed to the air. Lock internals are no exception, and barrels along this stretch of coast tend to seize earlier than inland equivalents.
Why the fault needs identifying before anything is replaced
Because the symptoms of a worn barrel, a failed switch and a jammed column lock are so similar, guesswork is expensive. We test to establish which component has actually failed rather than fitting the most likely candidate and seeing what happens.

How a Hove call-out actually runs
Here is exactly how the job runs, step by step.
Tell us what it is doing
Call or message with the make, model, registration and what the key or wheel is doing. That usually tells us which parts and programming to bring.
We come to the vehicle
We attend wherever it is standing. We attend anywhere in Hove or the wider BN3 area. At home, at work or at the roadside — all the same to us.
Diagnose, then repair
We establish whether the fault is the barrel, the switch, the steering lock or the key, explain what we have found, and then rebuild, replace or programme as needed.
Test and hand back
We check the ignition, the steering lock release and the immobiliser all behave correctly before we leave, and the work is covered by a parts and labour warranty.
Covering Hove and the BN3 area
Our Hove work takes in Hove seafront, Portslade, Aldrington, Hangleton, West Blatchington and the BN3 residential streets.
Promenade parking, side streets and multi-storeys are all routine, whatever the weather is doing off the sea. No workshop, no ramp, no queue. The vehicle stays where it is and we come to it.
We are based at Greenhedges, Felcot Road, East Grinstead, West Sussex RH19 2QA, which puts Hove comfortably within our regular working area.
Nearby coverage
Alongside Hove we regularly attend Brighton, Shoreham-by-Sea, Worthing, Hurstpierpoint, Burgess Hill and Littlehampton.
Our patch takes in Surrey, Kent, Berkshire, Essex and London alongside the whole of East Sussex. Call with a postcode if you want it confirmed.
Ignition stuck right now?
Stop turning it before something breaks. Ring us and tell us what the key and the wheel are doing. We cover Hove and the BN3 area.
Ignition and steering lock FAQs for Hove
What Hove customers ask first — barrel, switch, steering lock and nearby coverage.
Do you repair ignition barrels and steering locks in Hove?
Yes. Mr Ignition is a mobile ignition barrel replacement and steering lock repair service covering Hove (BN3) in East Sussex, including Hove seafront. We diagnose at the vehicle — driveway, workplace, car park or roadside — from our East Grinstead base.
Is a locked steering wheel in Hove the ignition barrel or the steering lock?
It can be either, so we diagnose rather than guess. A stiff or immovable key points at the barrel. A key that turns normally with a locked column or a dash warning points at steering lock repair or an electronic steering lock. The Knowledge Centre explains how those faults differ.
Can you extract a snapped key in Hove?
Yes. broken key extraction is routine work in Hove. Leave the broken section alone — an undisturbed barrel can often be saved. Forcing, drilling or hooking the fragment is what turns an extraction into a replacement.
Which towns near Hove do you cover?
As well as Hove we regularly cover Brighton, Shoreham-by-Sea and Worthing. The same mobile visit covers ignition barrel replacement, ignition switch replacement and steering lock repair. See every live page on areas we cover.
Do you programme Ford, Mercedes and other electronic steering locks in Hove?
Yes, on supported vehicles. That includes Mercedes ESL and EIS and ESL emulator programming for Ford, Renault, Nissan, BMW, MINI, Hyundai, Kia, Vauxhall and other listed makes. We confirm the lock at the vehicle in Hove before any module or emulator is programmed.
Can my Hove ignition barrel be rebuilt onto the existing key?
Often, yes — a rebuild is the first option we look at. It keeps your existing key and avoids immobiliser work. If the barrel is too far gone we replace it on supported cars and say so before starting. Related part references sit on the ignition barrel replacement page.
Is there a call-out fee for Hove?
No call-out fee. You are quoted for the diagnosed repair, not for us arriving. Call or get in touch with the registration, the fault and the Hove postcode.
Is ignition work in Hove guaranteed?
Yes. Parts and labour are warranted. Before we leave Hove we check the ignition, steering lock release and immobiliser together so the vehicle is confirmed as a system, not just at the repaired part.
Why ignition barrels fail, and what it feels like when they do
A barrel is a precision lock doing a heavy-duty job. The wafers inside have to align within very fine tolerances, and every turn of the key erodes those tolerances a fraction further.
The key and the lock wear as a pair, which is why fitting a new barrel to an old worn key sometimes solves nothing. Both halves have to be assessed together.
Nobody books a repair for a slightly stiff ignition, and that is understandable. But stiffness is the stage at which a rebuild is usually still possible, and a seized barrel is the stage at which it usually is not.
Vehicles we see this on most around Hove
Barrels wear by use, not by mileage, which is why converted campervans and horse boxes appear alongside working vans. Ford, Citroen, Peugeot, Volkswagen, Vauxhall, Honda, Hyundai, Audi and Mercedes-Benz are all familiar to us.
Electronic steering locks: ESL, ELV and ESCL faults
Where an older car had a steel pawl and a cable, a modern one has a motorised module clamped to the column. It is a sealed electronic assembly, and when it fails it usually fails in the locked position.
These units almost always fail in the worst possible state: locked, with the vehicle immobilised. Replacement means fitting and then programming, because the car has to accept the new module as its own. That programming is the specialist end of the work.
How to tell an ESL fault from a barrel fault
The tell is usually where the resistance is. Barrel faults are felt through the key. ESL faults are reported by the car — a warning message, a locked wheel, a refusal to start despite everything else appearing normal.
What to do right now if your key will not turn
Resist the urge to apply more force. Almost every snapped key we extract was snapped by somebody trying just a little harder, and extraction always has to happen before the underlying fault can be addressed.
Try the following first — some of these do resolve the problem, and all of them are useful information for us.
- Rock the steering wheel gently while turning the key — the column may be loaded against a kerb or at full lock
- Make sure the vehicle is properly in Park, or in gear with the clutch down on a manual
- Try your spare key; if the spare works, the fault is the key rather than the barrel
- Check the key for visible wear, bending or a cracked plastic head
- Take heavy items off the keyring — weight on the barrel causes and worsens this fault
- Do not spray oil or lubricant into the barrel; it collects grit and makes the eventual repair harder
- Never lever or drill at a snapped key — extraction is far easier before anyone has dug at it
If the key has already snapped
Leave the broken section in place. It is far easier to extract a key that is sitting where it broke than one that has been driven deeper into the cylinder by attempts to remove it.
Mobile repair or recovery to a garage?
Recovery adds cost and delay without adding any diagnosis. The vehicle is loaded, transported, and then queued at a garage that may or may not have the specialist tooling for ignition and immobiliser work.
The job happens in the driver's footwell and around the column, so lifting the vehicle is irrelevant. That is the reason mobile ignition work is practical at all, and why we can programme modules at the kerbside.
Not every job finishes on the first visit. Some parts have to be ordered and some units need bench work — but you will know that from us, after a proper diagnosis rather than instead of one.
What the work covers
Depending on what the diagnosis shows, the job could be any of the following.
- Rebuilding the existing barrel — new internals, same key, no reprogramming needed
- Fitting a replacement barrel — supplied and programmed to the vehicle as required
- Extracting a snapped key — removal, then an assessment of whether the lock survived
- Replacing the ignition switch — the electrical half, when the mechanical half is sound
- Repairing or replacing the steering lock — both mechanical pawls and electronic modules
- Programming ESL and EIS units — including Mercedes-Benz systems
- Programming an ESL emulator — where the vehicle supports it as a long-term fix
In all cases the vehicle is checked as a whole — key, barrel, column lock and immobiliser — before we sign off, backed by a parts and labour warranty.
