Ignition faults fixed where the vehicle stands in Harlow

Ignition faults rarely give much warning. A barrel that felt slightly stiff for a few weeks becomes a barrel that will not move at all, usually at the least convenient moment. Because the vehicle cannot then be driven, the default assumption is recovery to a garage — and that is very often unnecessary.

We attend, diagnose properly, and where the parts and programming allow we finish the job in the same visit. If a part has to be ordered we say so up front rather than leaving the vehicle stripped and waiting.

Much of our Harlow work is trade vehicles and daily drivers — the sort of vehicle that has to be working tomorrow morning, which is why we aim to finish on the first visit.

Why the fault needs identifying before anything is replaced

Four or five completely different faults present in almost exactly the same way. Barrel, switch, column lock, immobiliser and key wear all produce a vehicle that will not start. Working out which one it is, before ordering parts, is the part of the job that saves you money.

How It Works

How a Harlow call-out actually runs

Four stages, and you know what is happening at each one.

1

Describe the symptom

Ring or message with make, model, reg and exactly what happens when you turn the key. That shapes what we bring with us.

2

We attend on site

The vehicle stays where it is. We attend anywhere in Harlow or the wider CM18 and CM20 area. The location is your choice, because we bring everything with us.

3

Diagnosis, then the repair

We identify which component has actually failed, explain the options, and carry out the rebuild, replacement or programming that follows from it.

4

Tested, then handed over

Nothing is finished until the key turns, the wheel releases and the immobiliser is happy. Parts and labour warranty included.

Covering Harlow and the CM18 and CM20 area

Our Harlow work takes in Harlow town centre, The Stow, Bush Fair, Church Langley, Templefields and the CM20 industrial estates.

Whether the vehicle is at home, at work or stranded on a verge, we can carry out the repair there. As a mobile-only operation, everything happens at the vehicle. That removes the recovery cost from the equation in the majority of jobs.

We are based at Greenhedges, Felcot Road, East Grinstead, West Sussex RH19 2QA, which puts Harlow comfortably within our regular working area.

Nearby coverage

Alongside Harlow we regularly attend Chelmsford, Basildon, Colchester, Barking, Grays and Southend-on-Sea.

We range well beyond Essex — Sussex, Surrey, Kent, Berkshire and London are all covered too. A quick call with your postcode settles it.

Common questions

Ignition and steering lock FAQs for Harlow

What Harlow customers ask first — barrel, switch, steering lock and nearby coverage.

Do you repair ignition barrels and steering locks in Harlow?

Yes. Mr Ignition is a mobile ignition barrel replacement and steering lock repair service covering Harlow (CM18 and CM20) in Essex, including Harlow town centre. We diagnose at the vehicle — driveway, workplace, car park or roadside — from our East Grinstead base.

Is a locked steering wheel in Harlow the ignition barrel or the steering lock?

It can be either, so we diagnose rather than guess. A stiff or immovable key points at the barrel. A key that turns normally with a locked column or a dash warning points at steering lock repair or an electronic steering lock. The Knowledge Centre explains how those faults differ.

Can you extract a snapped key in Harlow?

Yes. broken key extraction is routine work in Harlow. Leave the broken section alone — an undisturbed barrel can often be saved. Forcing, drilling or hooking the fragment is what turns an extraction into a replacement.

Which towns near Harlow do you cover?

As well as Harlow we regularly cover Chelmsford, Basildon and Colchester. The same mobile visit covers ignition barrel replacement, ignition switch replacement and steering lock repair. See every live page on areas we cover.

Do you programme Ford, Mercedes and other electronic steering locks in Harlow?

Yes, on supported vehicles. That includes Mercedes ESL and EIS and ESL emulator programming for Ford, Renault, Nissan, BMW, MINI, Hyundai, Kia, Vauxhall and other listed makes. We confirm the lock at the vehicle in Harlow before any module or emulator is programmed.

Can my Harlow ignition barrel be rebuilt onto the existing key?

Often, yes — a rebuild is the first option we look at. It keeps your existing key and avoids immobiliser work. If the barrel is too far gone we replace it on supported cars and say so before starting. Related part references sit on the ignition barrel replacement page.

Is there a call-out fee for Harlow?

No call-out fee. You are quoted for the diagnosed repair, not for us arriving. Call or get in touch with the registration, the fault and the Harlow postcode.

Is ignition work in Harlow guaranteed?

Yes. Parts and labour are warranted. Before we leave Harlow we check the ignition, steering lock release and immobiliser together so the vehicle is confirmed as a system, not just at the repaired part.

Why ignition barrels fail, and what it feels like when they do

An ignition barrel contains a set of sprung wafers or tumblers that the key lifts into alignment. Every single insertion wears both the key and those wafers very slightly. After years of use the tolerances open up, alignment becomes marginal, and the barrel starts needing persuasion.

Duplicated keys compound the wear. Each copy is cut from the last, so tolerances drift, and a third-generation copy can be measurably off-profile while still appearing to work.

There is a window between "a bit awkward" and "will not move", and it is worth acting inside it. Once the cylinder seizes outright, the options narrow and the cost rises.

Vehicles we see this on most around Harlow

Barrels wear by use, not by mileage, which is why converted campervans and horse boxes appear alongside working vans. Ford, Citroen, Peugeot, Volkswagen, Vauxhall, Honda, Hyundai, Audi and Mercedes-Benz are all familiar to us.

Electronic steering locks: ESL, ELV and ESCL faults

Electronic steering locks changed the failure picture considerably. The locking pin is driven by a small motor and gearbox, monitored electronically, and the vehicle refuses to start if it cannot confirm the pin has withdrawn.

An ESL failure is not something a general garage can usually resolve by fitting a part. The module must be programmed into the vehicle's security system, and on supported cars an emulator programmed to the original data is often the better route.

How to tell an ESL fault from a barrel fault

Mechanical faults announce themselves through the key; electronic ones announce themselves on the dashboard. A stiff or gritty key points one way, a steering lock warning with a perfectly normal key points the other.

What to do right now if your key will not turn

Resist the urge to apply more force. Almost every snapped key we extract was snapped by somebody trying just a little harder, and extraction always has to happen before the underlying fault can be addressed.

Before ringing, run through the list below. Occasionally the answer is in there, and if not it still helps the diagnosis.

  • Ease the steering wheel side to side while gently trying the key, in case the column is under load
  • Confirm the selector is fully in Park, or the clutch is fully depressed on a manual
  • Test the spare key — a working spare points at key wear, not barrel failure
  • Inspect the blade for bends, wear ridges or a split head
  • Strip the keyring down to just the key and try again
  • Avoid penetrating oils and lubricant sprays; they trap dirt inside the cylinder
  • Leave a broken key exactly where it is rather than attempting to pull it out

If the key has already snapped

Stop there and call. We carry extraction tooling and the job is routine — provided nothing has been pushed further in or snapped off deeper. That is the one thing that turns a cheap job into an expensive one.

Mobile repair or recovery to a garage?

Loading the vehicle onto a truck changes its postcode, not its fault. And it puts you at the back of a queue at a garage that may then look for an ignition specialist anyway.

This is not work that needs a ramp. Everything is accessed from inside the cabin at the column and dashboard, which is why a parking space is as good as a workshop bay. Programming is carried out on site with the kit in the van.

There are limits to what is sensible at the roadside, and we are upfront about them. The point is that the decision follows the diagnosis.

What the work covers

After diagnosis, the job will be one of the following pieces of work.

  • Rebuilding the existing barrel — new internals, same key, no reprogramming needed
  • Fitting a replacement barrel — supplied and programmed to the vehicle as required
  • Extracting a snapped key — removal, then an assessment of whether the lock survived
  • Replacing the ignition switch — the electrical half, when the mechanical half is sound
  • Repairing or replacing the steering lock — both mechanical pawls and electronic modules
  • Programming ESL and EIS units — including Mercedes-Benz systems
  • Programming an ESL emulator — where the vehicle supports it as a long-term fix

The final step is always a full functional check of ignition, steering lock and immobiliser, and the job carries a parts and labour warranty.
