Hyundai i10 ignition barrel replacement, Tonbridge
Hyundai i10 ignition barrel replaced at the vehicle.
Key will not turn, or the steering stays locked in Tonbridge? We come to the vehicle and repair it where it stands.
No call-out fee · Mobile service · 6-month parts and labour warranty
Most ignition problems build up quietly. The key needs jiggling, then needs holding at a particular angle, then one morning does nothing whatsoever. By the time it fails outright the vehicle is immobile, which is exactly why a mobile repair tends to be both faster and cheaper.
We attend, diagnose properly, and where the parts and programming allow we finish the job in the same visit. If a part has to be ordered we say so up front rather than leaving the vehicle stripped and waiting.
Much of our Tonbridge work is trade vehicles and daily drivers — the sort of vehicle that has to be working tomorrow morning, which is why we aim to finish on the first visit.
The overlap in symptoms is the whole problem. A stiff key, a locked wheel and a no-start can each point at several different components. Diagnosis is not a formality here — it is what determines whether the repair costs a little or a lot.
All of the following is mobile work, done where the vehicle stands. Each one links through to the full explanation.
From a full strip and rebuild through to supply, fit and coding of a replacement lock.
Steering locks jammed in the locked position freed, repaired or replaced, on site.
Mercedes-Benz column lock and ignition switch specialists, including postal options on some units.
Specialist extraction tooling for snapped and jammed keys — best done before anyone else has tried.
For the fault where everything turns as it should and still nothing powers up or cranks.
Emulators programmed to the original vehicle data for Mercedes, BMW, Ford, Nissan, Renault and PSA systems.
From your first message to a working key, the job breaks down into four steps.
Call or message with the make, model, registration and what the key or wheel is doing. That usually tells us which parts and programming to bring.
We attend wherever it is standing. We attend anywhere in Tonbridge or the wider TN9 area. Home, work, roadside or car park — wherever it is standing.
We establish whether the fault is the barrel, the switch, the steering lock or the key, explain what we have found, and then rebuild, replace or programme as needed.
We check the ignition, the steering lock release and the immobiliser all behave correctly before we leave, and the work is covered by a parts and labour warranty.
Our Tonbridge work takes in Tonbridge town centre, Higham Wood, Trench Wood, Hilden Park and the TN9 industrial estates.
Whether the vehicle is at home, at work or stranded on a verge, we can carry out the repair there. Operating mobile rather than from premises means the vehicle stays put. Speak to us before you call a recovery truck.
We are based at Greenhedges, Felcot Road, East Grinstead, West Sussex RH19 2QA, which puts Tonbridge comfortably within our regular working area.
Alongside Tonbridge we regularly attend Royal Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks, Maidstone, East Grinstead, Oxted and Hurst Green.
We travel widely — all of Kent, plus Sussex, Surrey, Berkshire, Essex and London. Tell us the postcode and we will say yes or no honestly.
Do not force the key — that is how keys snap off inside the barrel. Call us and describe what is happening instead. We cover Tonbridge and the TN9 area.
What Tonbridge customers ask first — barrel, switch, steering lock and nearby coverage.
Yes. Mr Ignition is a mobile ignition barrel replacement and steering lock repair service covering Tonbridge (TN9) in Kent, including Tonbridge town centre. We diagnose at the vehicle — driveway, workplace, car park or roadside — from our East Grinstead base.
It can be either, so we diagnose rather than guess. A stiff or immovable key points at the barrel. A key that turns normally with a locked column or a dash warning points at steering lock repair or an electronic steering lock. The Knowledge Centre explains how those faults differ.
Yes. broken key extraction is routine work in Tonbridge. Leave the broken section alone — an undisturbed barrel can often be saved. Forcing, drilling or hooking the fragment is what turns an extraction into a replacement.
As well as Tonbridge we regularly cover Royal Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks and Maidstone. The same mobile visit covers ignition barrel replacement, ignition switch replacement and steering lock repair. See every live page on areas we cover.
Yes, on supported vehicles. That includes Mercedes ESL and EIS and ESL emulator programming for Ford, Renault, Nissan, BMW, MINI, Hyundai, Kia, Vauxhall and other listed makes. We confirm the lock at the vehicle in Tonbridge before any module or emulator is programmed.
Often, yes — a rebuild is the first option we look at. It keeps your existing key and avoids immobiliser work. If the barrel is too far gone we replace it on supported cars and say so before starting. Related part references sit on the ignition barrel replacement page.
No call-out fee. You are quoted for the diagnosed repair, not for us arriving. Call or get in touch with the registration, the fault and the Tonbridge postcode.
Yes. Parts and labour are warranted. Before we leave Tonbridge we check the ignition, steering lock release and immobiliser together so the vehicle is confirmed as a system, not just at the repaired part.
The failure mode is almost always cumulative rather than a single dramatic event. Key and barrel wear together, gradually, until the margin for error simply disappears and the cylinder jams.
The key and the lock wear as a pair, which is why fitting a new barrel to an old worn key sometimes solves nothing. Both halves have to be assessed together.
The early warning signs are subtle and easy to live with, which is exactly why so many barrels get driven until they seize completely. If your key already needs a particular knack, the barrel is telling you something.
We see the full spread, but vans lead the way. A Transit or Relay used for deliveries might see fifty ignition cycles a day, against half a dozen for a commuter car — so the barrels wear out years sooner. Golf, Crafter, Boxer, Audi, Honda, Hyundai, Vauxhall and Mercedes are all regulars.
Manufacturers replaced the mechanical column lock with a motorised electronic unit that talks to the rest of the vehicle. It is neater and more secure, but it introduces an electronic failure point where there was previously only a steel pin.
The consequence of an ESL failure is a car that will not start and a wheel that will not turn, often with a steering lock warning displayed. Fitting a replacement is only half the job — it then has to be matched to the vehicle electronically.
The tell is usually where the resistance is. Barrel faults are felt through the key. ESL faults are reported by the car — a warning message, a locked wheel, a refusal to start despite everything else appearing normal.
Resist the urge to apply more force. Almost every snapped key we extract was snapped by somebody trying just a little harder, and extraction always has to happen before the underlying fault can be addressed.
A few quick checks are worth running through. They sometimes resolve it, and they always narrow down what we need to bring.
Stop there and call. We carry extraction tooling and the job is routine — provided nothing has been pushed further in or snapped off deeper. That is the one thing that turns a cheap job into an expensive one.
Transport is the most avoidable cost in an ignition fault. The work itself happens at the column and the lock, both of which are entirely accessible where the vehicle already stands.
No ramp, no lift, no pit. Ignition and column lock work is cabin work, and the programming equipment travels with us.
We are not going to pretend everything is a one-visit fix. Occasionally a part has to come in, or a unit has to go on the bench. But that is a decision made after diagnosis, not before it.
After diagnosis, the job will be one of the following pieces of work.
Whatever the route, we test the ignition, the column lock release and the immobiliser as a system before leaving, and the work is covered by a parts and labour warranty.
We cover the towns and villages around here as part of the same mobile service. If the vehicle is closer to one of these, start there.
If your town is missing, we still probably cover it — Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Berkshire, Essex and London are all in range — see every area we cover, browse all our services, or read the Knowledge Centre for fault guides.
