On-site ignition barrel and steering lock work in Royal Tunbridge Wells
An ignition barrel is a mechanical assembly operated several times a day, every day, for years on end. Wear is normal and eventual failure is predictable. What is never predictable is where the vehicle happens to be standing when it finally gives up.
We attend, diagnose properly, and where the parts and programming allow we finish the job in the same visit. If a part has to be ordered we say so up front rather than leaving the vehicle stripped and waiting.
Royal Tunbridge Wells generates a steady stream of this work — commuter cars on driveways, trade vans on estates, and vehicles stuck in car parks that were only meant to be occupied for an hour.
Why the fault needs identifying before anything is replaced
Because the symptoms of a worn barrel, a failed switch and a jammed column lock are so similar, guesswork is expensive. We test to establish which component has actually failed rather than fitting the most likely candidate and seeing what happens.
The complaints we hear most
This is the list we hear down the phone most days. Catching it early is nearly always cheaper.
- Ignition feels gritty, stiff or notchy when you turn it
- Only one particular key works, and only sometimes
- Key rotates but the starter never engages
- Broken key still sitting in the cylinder
- Wheel locked hard over and will not free off
- Warning message about the steering lock on start-up
- Dashboard lights come on but the engine will not crank
- Have to hold the key in position to keep the engine running

How a Royal Tunbridge Wells call-out actually runs
Four stages, start to finish. Nothing hidden and no pressure at any point.
Tell us what it is doing
Call or message with the make, model, registration and what the key or wheel is doing. That usually tells us which parts and programming to bring.
We come to the vehicle
We attend wherever it is standing. We attend anywhere in Royal Tunbridge Wells or the wider TN1 and TN2 area. On the driveway, at the kerb, or in a car park; it makes little difference to us.
Diagnose, then repair
We establish whether the fault is the barrel, the switch, the steering lock or the key, explain what we have found, and then rebuild, replace or programme as needed.
Test and hand back
We check the ignition, the steering lock release and the immobiliser all behave correctly before we leave, and the work is covered by a parts and labour warranty.

Why ignition barrels fail, and what it feels like when they do
An ignition barrel contains a set of sprung wafers or tumblers that the key lifts into alignment. Every single insertion wears both the key and those wafers very slightly. After years of use the tolerances open up, alignment becomes marginal, and the barrel starts needing persuasion.
Keys are half the problem. A bent, worn or badly cut duplicate loads the wafers unevenly and wears them faster. This is precisely why a key can still open the doors while failing to turn the ignition.
Most people adapt to a failing ignition without really noticing — a particular angle, a particular wiggle. That adaptation is the warning, and it is the cheapest point to intervene.
Vehicles we see this on most around Royal Tunbridge Wells
We see the full spread, but vans lead the way. A Transit or Relay used for deliveries might see fifty ignition cycles a day, against half a dozen for a commuter car — so the barrels wear out years sooner. Golf, Crafter, Boxer, Audi, Honda, Hyundai, Vauxhall and Mercedes are all regulars.
Electronic steering locks: ESL, ELV and ESCL faults
Newer vehicles do not use a mechanical lock on the column at all. An electronic steering lock module drives a pin in and out under software control, and reports back to the vehicle that it has done so.
Because the module lives inside the immobiliser system, you cannot simply swap in a used one from a breaker. It has to be programmed to the vehicle, and on some platforms an emulator is the more reliable long-term answer.
How to tell an ESL fault from a barrel fault
A mechanical barrel fault normally shows up in the key: it will not turn, or turns roughly. An electronic steering lock fault more often shows up as a dashboard warning, a wheel that stays locked while the key or start button behaves entirely normally, or a vehicle that cranks but refuses to release the column.
What to do right now if your key will not turn
Before anything else: stop turning it. Extra force is what breaks keys off inside barrels, and a broken key in the cylinder adds an extraction stage before any repair can even begin.
Try the following first — some of these do resolve the problem, and all of them are useful information for us.
- Ease the steering wheel side to side while gently trying the key, in case the column is under load
- Confirm the selector is fully in Park, or the clutch is fully depressed on a manual
- Test the spare key — a working spare points at key wear, not barrel failure
- Inspect the blade for bends, wear ridges or a split head
- Strip the keyring down to just the key and try again
- Avoid penetrating oils and lubricant sprays; they trap dirt inside the cylinder
- Leave a broken key exactly where it is rather than attempting to pull it out
If the key has already snapped
Leave the broken section in place. It is far easier to extract a key that is sitting where it broke than one that has been driven deeper into the cylinder by attempts to remove it.
Mobile repair or recovery to a garage?
Recovery adds cost and delay without adding any diagnosis. The vehicle is loaded, transported, and then queued at a garage that may or may not have the specialist tooling for ignition and immobiliser work.
No ramp, no lift, no pit. Ignition and column lock work is cabin work, and the programming equipment travels with us.
We are not going to pretend everything is a one-visit fix. Occasionally a part has to come in, or a unit has to go on the bench. But that is a decision made after diagnosis, not before it.
What the work covers
These are the routes available, and which one applies is a diagnostic question.
- Rebuilding the existing barrel — new internals, same key, no reprogramming needed
- Fitting a replacement barrel — supplied and programmed to the vehicle as required
- Extracting a snapped key — removal, then an assessment of whether the lock survived
- Replacing the ignition switch — the electrical half, when the mechanical half is sound
- Repairing or replacing the steering lock — both mechanical pawls and electronic modules
- Programming ESL and EIS units — including Mercedes-Benz systems
- Programming an ESL emulator — where the vehicle supports it as a long-term fix
Nothing is called finished until the ignition turns, the wheel releases and the immobiliser is satisfied. The work comes with a parts and labour warranty.
Ignition and steering lock FAQs for Royal Tunbridge Wells
Straight answers to the questions that come up on nearly every call.
Do you work on vans, campervans and horse boxes?
Yes. Vans, campervans and horse box conversions are routine for us — often with worn barrels on low mileage, because it is the number of ignition cycles that does the damage rather than the miles.
Can I get a quote over the phone?
We can usually give you a realistic idea once we know the make, model, year and exactly what the vehicle is doing. What we will not do is commit to a firm figure for a fault nobody has looked at, because the same symptom can mean a rebuild or a programmed replacement.
Do you come out to Royal Tunbridge Wells, or do I bring the vehicle to you?
You do not need to bring it anywhere. We attend Royal Tunbridge Wells and the TN1 and TN2 area as standard, working at the vehicle on a driveway, in a car park or at the roadside.
My key will not turn in the ignition. What should I do first?
Stop forcing it. Continued force is the most common cause of a key snapping off inside the barrel, which adds an extraction job before the actual fault can be repaired. Check the steering wheel is not under load against a kerb, try your spare key if you have one, then call us with the make, model and registration.
Can the ignition barrel be repaired rather than replaced?
Frequently it can. A rebuild replaces the worn internals while keeping your original key, which is usually the cheaper route and avoids any reprogramming. It depends on how far the wear has gone, so we assess the barrel before recommending anything.
How quickly can you get to Royal Tunbridge Wells?
Realistically it depends on workload and where exactly you are in TN1 and TN2. We are based at East Grinstead, so travel is not the issue — availability is. Call and we will give you a straight answer on the day.
Do you handle electronic steering lock and Mercedes ESL faults?
Yes, that is a large part of our work. We diagnose, repair, replace and programme electronic steering lock and electronic ignition switch systems on supported vehicles, including Mercedes-Benz ESL and EIS units. Where the platform supports it, a correctly programmed emulator can be a durable alternative to a replacement module.
Can you get a snapped key out of the barrel?
Yes, we do this regularly and carry the tooling for it. The important thing is to leave the broken section alone — an undisturbed barrel usually survives extraction, whereas one that has been drilled or levered at generally needs replacing.
Will a repair affect my immobiliser or mean new keys?
Possibly. Rebuilding around your existing key avoids the issue entirely. Fitting new components often means programming so the immobiliser accepts them — we confirm which applies once we have diagnosed the fault.
