Ignition faults rarely give much warning. A barrel that felt slightly stiff for a few weeks becomes a barrel that will not move at all, usually at the least convenient moment. Why ignition barrels fail, and what it feels like when they do
Inside the barrel, small sprung components must line up precisely before the cylinder can rotate at all. Metal wears, springs weaken, and old lubricant dries out and turns gummy. Once alignment is marginal the barrel becomes unpredictable.
Duplicated keys compound the wear. Each copy is cut from the last, so tolerances drift, and a third-generation copy can be measurably off-profile while still appearing to work.
There is a window between "a bit awkward" and "will not move", and it is worth acting inside it. Once the cylinder seizes outright, the options narrow and the cost rises.

Electronic steering locks: ESL, ELV and ESCL faults
Electronic steering locks changed the failure picture considerably. The locking pin is driven by a small motor and gearbox, monitored electronically, and the vehicle refuses to start if it cannot confirm the pin has withdrawn.
When one of these units fails it commonly fails locked, with a warning on the dash and a steering wheel that will not release. Because the module sits in the immobiliser chain, a replacement usually has to be programmed to the vehicle rather than simply bolted on. That is specialist work, and it is a large part of what we do.
How to tell an ESL fault from a barrel fault
Mechanical faults announce themselves through the key; electronic ones announce themselves on the dashboard. A stiff or gritty key points one way, a steering lock warning with a perfectly normal key points the other.
What to do right now if your key will not turn
Resist the urge to apply more force. Almost every snapped key we extract was snapped by somebody trying just a little harder, and extraction always has to happen before the underlying fault can be addressed.
Before ringing, run through the list below. Occasionally the answer is in there, and if not it still helps the diagnosis.
- Ease the steering wheel side to side while gently trying the key, in case the column is under load
- Confirm the selector is fully in Park, or the clutch is fully depressed on a manual
- Test the spare key — a working spare points at key wear, not barrel failure
- Inspect the blade for bends, wear ridges or a split head
- Strip the keyring down to just the key and try again
- Avoid penetrating oils and lubricant sprays; they trap dirt inside the cylinder
- Leave a broken key exactly where it is rather than attempting to pull it out
If the key has already snapped
Stop there and call. We carry extraction tooling and the job is routine — provided nothing has been pushed further in or snapped off deeper. That is the one thing that turns a cheap job into an expensive one.
Mobile repair or recovery to a garage?
Loading the vehicle onto a truck changes its postcode, not its fault. And it puts you at the back of a queue at a garage that may then look for an ignition specialist anyway.
This is not work that needs a ramp. Everything is accessed from inside the cabin at the column and dashboard, which is why a parking space is as good as a workshop bay. Programming is carried out on site with the kit in the van.
There are limits to what is sensible at the roadside, and we are upfront about them. The point is that the decision follows the diagnosis.

Can the ignition barrel be repaired rather than replaced?
Often, yes. Where the barrel is worn rather than destroyed we can frequently rebuild it to work with your existing key, which avoids the cost of a new lock and the need to re-key or reprogram. Whether that is possible depends on the vehicle and the condition of the parts, which is why we diagnose before quoting.
How quickly can you get to Reading?

It depends on the route the repair takes. Rebuilds normally keep your original key and need no programming at all. New barrels and electronic modules usually do need coding to the vehicle. You will know which before we begin.

The steering wheel is locked solid. Is that the ignition or the steering lock?
It can be either, and telling them apart is the first job. If the key also feels wrong, the barrel is the likely culprit. If the key behaves entirely normally but the wheel will not release — particularly with a warning on the dash — it points at the steering lock instead.
