Why ignition barrels fail, and what it feels like when they do
An ignition barrel contains a set of sprung wafers or tumblers that the key lifts into alignment. Every single insertion wears both the key and those wafers very slightly. After years of use the tolerances open up, alignment becomes marginal, and the barrel starts needing persuasion.
Key condition matters more than most people expect. A worn blade sits slightly wrong in the barrel, loads the wafers unevenly, and quietly damages the lock a little more every time it is used.
There is a window between "a bit awkward" and "will not move", and it is worth acting inside it. Once the cylinder seizes outright, the options narrow and the cost rises.

A failed ESL typically leaves the column locked and the vehicle immobilised. Replacement parts are coded to the car, so the work involves programming as well as fitting. Where the platform supports it, a properly programmed emulator is a durable alternative.
How to tell an ESL fault from a barrel fault
If the key feels wrong, suspect the barrel. If the key feels completely normal but the car will not release the wheel or start, suspect the electronic lock. Getting this right at the roadside is what stops the wrong part being fitted.
What to do right now if your key will not turn
The first rule is to stop trying. Force does not overcome worn wafers, it just finds the weakest point in the key — and that point is usually inside the lock.
Before ringing, run through the list below. Occasionally the answer is in there, and if not it still helps the diagnosis.
- Rock the steering wheel gently while turning the key — the column may be loaded against a kerb or at full lock
- Make sure the vehicle is properly in Park, or in gear with the clutch down on a manual
- Try your spare key; if the spare works, the fault is the key rather than the barrel
- Check the key for visible wear, bending or a cracked plastic head
- Take heavy items off the keyring — weight on the barrel causes and worsens this fault
- Do not spray oil or lubricant into the barrel; it collects grit and makes the eventual repair harder
- Never lever or drill at a snapped key — extraction is far easier before anyone has dug at it
If the key has already snapped
Best thing you can do is nothing. Extraction is a normal part of our work and the barrel is often reusable afterwards, but only if it has not been damaged in the meantime.
Mobile repair or recovery to a garage?
Recovery is money spent moving a problem rather than solving it. The diagnosis still has to happen, and it happens just as well on your driveway as on a workshop floor.
Because access is from inside the vehicle rather than underneath it, a workshop offers no real advantage for this type of repair. We bring the diagnostic and programming equipment to you.
There are exceptions, and we will say so. Some faults need a part that has to be ordered, and a few need bench work. What we will not do is load the vehicle onto a truck before anyone has established what is actually wrong with it.
