Why ignition barrels fail, and what it feels like when they do
An ignition barrel contains a set of sprung wafers or tumblers that the key lifts into alignment. Every single insertion wears both the key and those wafers very slightly. After years of use the tolerances open up, alignment becomes marginal, and the barrel starts needing persuasion.
Weight on the keyring is a badly underrated cause. A heavy bunch of keys hanging from the ignition applies constant leverage to both the barrel and the switch behind it, wearing out both prematurely.
Nobody books a repair for a slightly stiff ignition, and that is understandable. But stiffness is the stage at which a rebuild is usually still possible, and a seized barrel is the stage at which it usually is not.

Electronic steering locks: ESL, ELV and ESCL faults
Newer vehicles do not use a mechanical lock on the column at all. An electronic steering lock module drives a pin in and out under software control, and reports back to the vehicle that it has done so.
An ESL failure is not something a general garage can usually resolve by fitting a part. The module must be programmed into the vehicle's security system, and on supported cars an emulator programmed to the original data is often the better route.
How to tell an ESL fault from a barrel fault
If the key feels wrong, suspect the barrel. If the key feels completely normal but the car will not release the wheel or start, suspect the electronic lock. Getting this right at the roadside is what stops the wrong part being fitted.
What to do right now if your key will not turn
Before anything else: stop turning it. Extra force is what breaks keys off inside barrels, and a broken key in the cylinder adds an extraction stage before any repair can even begin.
A few quick checks are worth running through. They sometimes resolve it, and they always narrow down what we need to bring.
- Relieve pressure on the column by rocking the wheel as you turn the key
- Check the gearbox is genuinely in Park, or the clutch pedal is on the floor
- Swap to the spare key if you have one — it isolates key wear from barrel wear
- Look closely at the key for wear, distortion or cracks
- Remove fobs, tags and other keys from the ring to take the weight off
- Do not use WD-40 or similar in the barrel; it makes matters worse, not better
- Do not attempt to extract a snapped key with tools
If the key has already snapped
Do not touch it. Extraction from an undisturbed barrel is straightforward and the lock frequently survives. Extraction after somebody has been at it with pliers or a drill usually means a new barrel and new programming.
Mobile repair or recovery to a garage?
Recovery is money spent moving a problem rather than solving it. The diagnosis still has to happen, and it happens just as well on your driveway as on a workshop floor.
Ignition and steering lock work is well suited to being done on site. The components are reached from the steering column and the dash, not from underneath on a ramp, so a driveway or a car park space is a perfectly workable environment. Where programming is needed it is done at the vehicle with the equipment we carry.
Some faults do need more than a single visit. Where that is the case we say so clearly and explain why, rather than leaving the vehicle in pieces while something is chased up.

It can be either, and telling them apart is the first job. If the key also feels wrong, the barrel is the likely culprit. If the key behaves entirely normally but the wheel will not release — particularly with a warning on the dash — it points at the steering lock instead.
My key turns but the vehicle will not start. Is that still an ignition fault?
Quite possibly. A barrel that turns freely while nothing powers up usually points at the electrical switch behind it. The immobiliser and the column lock are the other candidates, which is why this one needs testing rather than assuming.
