Specialist ignition and steering lock help in Horsham

The maddening part of an ignition fault is that everything else about the vehicle is perfectly fine. The engine is healthy, the battery is good, the keys are in your hand — and none of it counts for anything, because the barrel will not rotate.

We would rather spend the first part of the visit finding out what is genuinely wrong than fitting a new barrel and hoping. It is the difference between fixing the fault and replacing a component that was never the problem.

Horsham generates a steady stream of this work — commuter cars on driveways, trade vans on estates, and vehicles stuck in car parks that were only meant to be occupied for an hour.

Why the fault needs identifying before anything is replaced

Because the symptoms of a worn barrel, a failed switch and a jammed column lock are so similar, guesswork is expensive. We test to establish which component has actually failed rather than fitting the most likely candidate and seeing what happens.

When to pick up the phone

This is the list we hear down the phone most days. Catching it early is nearly always cheaper.

  • Key needs jiggling, wiggling or holding at a certain angle
  • Key will not turn at all, or turns part way and stops
  • Key has snapped off inside the barrel
  • Key goes in but will not come back out
  • Steering wheel stays locked and will not release
  • Steering lock, ESL or ELV warning showing on the dash
  • Barrel spins freely but nothing electrical happens
  • Vehicle starts intermittently, or cuts out if the key is nudged

How It Works

How a Horsham call-out actually runs

Here is exactly how the job runs, step by step.

1

Tell us what it is doing

Call or message with the make, model, registration and what the key or wheel is doing. That usually tells us which parts and programming to bring.

2

We come to the vehicle

We attend wherever it is standing. We attend anywhere in Horsham or the wider RH12 and RH13 area. On the driveway, at the kerb, or in a car park; it makes little difference to us.

3

Diagnose, then repair

We establish whether the fault is the barrel, the switch, the steering lock or the key, explain what we have found, and then rebuild, replace or programme as needed.

4

Test and hand back

We check the ignition, the steering lock release and the immobiliser all behave correctly before we leave, and the work is covered by a parts and labour warranty.

Why ignition barrels fail, and what it feels like when they do

Inside the barrel, small sprung components must line up precisely before the cylinder can rotate at all. Metal wears, springs weaken, and old lubricant dries out and turns gummy. Once alignment is marginal the barrel becomes unpredictable.

Weight on the keyring is a badly underrated cause. A heavy bunch of keys hanging from the ignition applies constant leverage to both the barrel and the switch behind it, wearing out both prematurely.

There is a window between "a bit awkward" and "will not move", and it is worth acting inside it. Once the cylinder seizes outright, the options narrow and the cost rises.

Vehicles we see this on most around Horsham

Certain vehicles are simply over-represented. Ford Transit and Transit Custom, Volkswagen Golf and Crafter, Citroen Relay and Peugeot Boxer, plus Vauxhall, Honda, Hyundai, Audi and Mercedes-Benz. Campervans and horse boxes based on van platforms come up too, often with very high ignition cycle counts on low mileage.

Electronic steering locks: ESL, ELV and ESCL faults

Newer vehicles do not use a mechanical lock on the column at all. An electronic steering lock module drives a pin in and out under software control, and reports back to the vehicle that it has done so.

Because the module lives inside the immobiliser system, you cannot simply swap in a used one from a breaker. It has to be programmed to the vehicle, and on some platforms an emulator is the more reliable long-term answer.

How to tell an ESL fault from a barrel fault

If the key feels wrong, suspect the barrel. If the key feels completely normal but the car will not release the wheel or start, suspect the electronic lock. Getting this right at the roadside is what stops the wrong part being fitted.

What to do right now if your key will not turn

The single most useful thing you can do is stop forcing it. A key being forced in a stiff barrel is the most common way a bad situation becomes an expensive one, because a snapped key inside the cylinder turns a straightforward repair into an extraction job first.

These are worth two minutes of your time before you call us out.

  • Ease the steering wheel side to side while gently trying the key, in case the column is under load
  • Confirm the selector is fully in Park, or the clutch is fully depressed on a manual
  • Test the spare key — a working spare points at key wear, not barrel failure
  • Inspect the blade for bends, wear ridges or a split head
  • Strip the keyring down to just the key and try again
  • Avoid penetrating oils and lubricant sprays; they trap dirt inside the cylinder
  • Leave a broken key exactly where it is rather than attempting to pull it out

If the key has already snapped

Leave it exactly as it is and call us. Broken key extraction is routine work when the barrel has been left alone, and the lock very often survives to be reused. Once somebody has attempted a DIY extraction, the barrel usually has to be replaced instead.

Mobile repair or recovery to a garage?

Recovery is money spent moving a problem rather than solving it. The diagnosis still has to happen, and it happens just as well on your driveway as on a workshop floor.

Column and dash access is all that is required, which makes a driveway, a work car park or a roadside layby entirely adequate. Any programming the vehicle needs is done there and then.

We are not going to pretend everything is a one-visit fix. Occasionally a part has to come in, or a unit has to go on the bench. But that is a decision made after diagnosis, not before it.

What the work covers

What actually gets done depends entirely on the diagnosis. The realistic options are these.

  • Barrel rebuild — worn wafers and springs replaced so the original key works again
  • Barrel replacement — a new lock fitted, with key or immobiliser programming where required
  • Broken key extraction — the snapped section removed and the barrel assessed
  • Ignition switch replacement — for the electrical fault behind a barrel that turns normally
  • Steering lock repair or replacement — mechanical and electronic column locks
  • ESL / EIS programming — replacement modules matched to the vehicle, Mercedes included
  • ESL emulator programming — a programmed alternative on supported platforms

In all cases the vehicle is checked as a whole — key, barrel, column lock and immobiliser — before we sign off, backed by a parts and labour warranty.

Common Questions

Ignition and steering lock FAQs for Horsham

Common queries, answered without the sales pitch.

How quickly can you get to Horsham?

Realistically it depends on workload and where exactly you are in RH12 and RH13. We are based at East Grinstead, so travel is not the issue — availability is. Call and we will give you a straight answer on the day.

Do you handle electronic steering lock and Mercedes ESL faults?

Yes, that is a large part of our work. We diagnose, repair, replace and programme electronic steering lock and electronic ignition switch systems on supported vehicles, including Mercedes-Benz ESL and EIS units. Where the platform supports it, a correctly programmed emulator can be a durable alternative to a replacement module.

Can you get a snapped key out of the barrel?

Yes, we do this regularly and carry the tooling for it. The important thing is to leave the broken section alone — an undisturbed barrel usually survives extraction, whereas one that has been drilled or levered at generally needs replacing.

Will a repair affect my immobiliser or mean new keys?

Possibly. Rebuilding around your existing key avoids the issue entirely. Fitting new components often means programming so the immobiliser accepts them — we confirm which applies once we have diagnosed the fault.

Which other areas near Horsham do you cover?

As well as Horsham we regularly cover Crawley, Handcross and Burgess Hill, plus the wider West Sussex area, then Surrey, Kent, Berkshire, Essex and London. If you are unsure whether you are in range, call with your postcode and we will confirm.

Is there a call-out charge?

We do not charge a call-out fee. The price is for the repair, quoted once the fault has been diagnosed — not a fee for arriving and then a second figure for the work.

Is the work guaranteed?

Yes, there is a parts and labour warranty on what we fit, and every job ends with a functional check of the ignition, steering lock and immobiliser together.

The steering wheel is locked solid. Is that the ignition or the steering lock?

Both faults produce a locked wheel, so it needs diagnosing rather than guessing. A rough or immovable key suggests the barrel; a normal-feeling key with a locked column and a dash warning suggests an electronic steering lock fault.

My key turns but the vehicle will not start. Is that still an ignition fault?

Yes, and this is a good example of why diagnosis matters. The mechanical half is clearly working, so attention moves to the ignition switch, the immobiliser or the steering lock.
