Specialist ignition and steering lock help in Purley

The maddening part of an ignition fault is that everything else about the vehicle is perfectly fine. The engine is healthy, the battery is good, the keys are in your hand — and none of it counts for anything, because the barrel will not rotate.

We work the other way round. A mobile specialist attends, establishes whether the fault lies with the barrel, the ignition switch, the steering lock or the key itself, and repairs it in place wherever that is practical.

The nearest main-dealer ramp from Purley is a dual carriageway away, which is no help when the key will not turn. We remove that journey from the problem.

Why the fault needs identifying before anything is replaced

Identical symptoms, different causes. That is why we diagnose on arrival instead of quoting for a barrel over the phone. Sometimes the barrel is fine and the fault is behind it; occasionally the fault is the key in your hand.

How It Works

How a Purley call-out actually runs

Four stages, start to finish. Nothing hidden and no pressure at any point.

1

Describe the symptom

Ring or message with make, model, reg and exactly what happens when you turn the key. That shapes what we bring with us.

2

We attend on site

The vehicle stays where it is. We attend anywhere in Purley or the wider CR8 area. Home, work, roadside or car park — wherever it is standing.

3

Diagnosis, then the repair

We identify which component has actually failed, explain the options, and carry out the rebuild, replacement or programming that follows from it.

4

Tested, then handed over

Nothing is finished until the key turns, the wheel releases and the immobiliser is happy. Parts and labour warranty included.

Covering Purley and the CR8 area

Our Purley work takes in Purley town centre, Purley Oaks, Russell Hill, Woodcote and the CR8 residential streets.

We are used to working off the main road, on gravel, grass verge or block paving alike. We have no workshop to bring the vehicle to, and that is the point. The repair happens where the vehicle already is, so recovery is usually avoidable entirely.

We are based at Greenhedges, Felcot Road, East Grinstead, West Sussex RH19 2QA, which puts Purley comfortably within our regular working area.

Nearby coverage

Alongside Purley we regularly attend Coulsdon, Croydon, Sutton, Caterham, Banstead and Hooley.

Coverage extends across London and the wider South East, including Sussex, Surrey, Kent, Berkshire and Essex. If you are not sure whether you fall inside our area, call with your postcode and we will tell you straight away.

Common questions

Ignition and steering lock FAQs for Purley

What Purley customers ask first — barrel, switch, steering lock and nearby coverage.

Do you repair ignition barrels and steering locks in Purley?

Yes. Mr Ignition is a mobile ignition barrel replacement and steering lock repair service covering Purley (CR8) in London, including Purley town centre. We diagnose at the vehicle — driveway, workplace, car park or roadside — from our East Grinstead base.

Is a locked steering wheel in Purley the ignition barrel or the steering lock?

It can be either, so we diagnose rather than guess. A stiff or immovable key points at the barrel. A key that turns normally with a locked column or a dash warning points at steering lock repair or an electronic steering lock. The Knowledge Centre explains how those faults differ.

Can you extract a snapped key in Purley?

Yes. broken key extraction is routine work in Purley. Leave the broken section alone — an undisturbed barrel can often be saved. Forcing, drilling or hooking the fragment is what turns an extraction into a replacement.

Which towns near Purley do you cover?

As well as Purley we regularly cover Coulsdon, Croydon and Sutton. The same mobile visit covers ignition barrel replacement, ignition switch replacement and steering lock repair. See every live page on areas we cover.

Do you programme Ford, Mercedes and other electronic steering locks in Purley?

Yes, on supported vehicles. That includes Mercedes ESL and EIS and ESL emulator programming for Ford, Renault, Nissan, BMW, MINI, Hyundai, Kia, Vauxhall and other listed makes. We confirm the lock at the vehicle in Purley before any module or emulator is programmed.

Can my Purley ignition barrel be rebuilt onto the existing key?

Often, yes — a rebuild is the first option we look at. It keeps your existing key and avoids immobiliser work. If the barrel is too far gone we replace it on supported cars and say so before starting. Related part references sit on the ignition barrel replacement page.

Is there a call-out fee for Purley?

No call-out fee. You are quoted for the diagnosed repair, not for us arriving. Call or get in touch with the registration, the fault and the Purley postcode.

Is ignition work in Purley guaranteed?

Yes. Parts and labour are warranted. Before we leave Purley we check the ignition, steering lock release and immobiliser together so the vehicle is confirmed as a system, not just at the repaired part.

Why ignition barrels fail, and what it feels like when they do

A barrel is a precision lock doing a heavy-duty job. The wafers inside have to align within very fine tolerances, and every turn of the key erodes those tolerances a fraction further.

Keys are half the problem. A bent, worn or badly cut duplicate loads the wafers unevenly and wears them faster. This is precisely why a key can still open the doors while failing to turn the ignition.

If you have started thinking of it as a quirk rather than a fault, it is a fault. Barrels do not recover.

Vehicles we see this on most around Purley

We see the full spread, but vans lead the way. A Transit or Relay used for deliveries might see fifty ignition cycles a day, against half a dozen for a commuter car — so the barrels wear out years sooner. Golf, Crafter, Boxer, Audi, Honda, Hyundai, Vauxhall and Mercedes are all regulars.

Electronic steering locks: ESL, ELV and ESCL faults

Manufacturers replaced the mechanical column lock with a motorised electronic unit that talks to the rest of the vehicle. It is neater and more secure, but it introduces an electronic failure point where there was previously only a steel pin.

Because the module lives inside the immobiliser system, you cannot simply swap in a used one from a breaker. It has to be programmed to the vehicle, and on some platforms an emulator is the more reliable long-term answer.

How to tell an ESL fault from a barrel fault

A mechanical barrel fault normally shows up in the key: it will not turn, or turns roughly. An electronic steering lock fault more often shows up as a dashboard warning, a wheel that stays locked while the key or start button behaves entirely normally, or a vehicle that cranks but refuses to release the column.

What to do right now if your key will not turn

The first rule is to stop trying. Force does not overcome worn wafers, it just finds the weakest point in the key — and that point is usually inside the lock.

Beyond that, a few checks are worth doing before you call, because they occasionally solve the problem outright and always help us bring the right parts.

  • Relieve pressure on the column by rocking the wheel as you turn the key
  • Check the gearbox is genuinely in Park, or the clutch pedal is on the floor
  • Swap to the spare key if you have one — it isolates key wear from barrel wear
  • Look closely at the key for wear, distortion or cracks
  • Remove fobs, tags and other keys from the ring to take the weight off
  • Do not use WD-40 or similar in the barrel; it makes matters worse, not better
  • Do not attempt to extract a snapped key with tools

If the key has already snapped

Best thing you can do is nothing. Extraction is a normal part of our work and the barrel is often reusable afterwards, but only if it has not been damaged in the meantime.

Mobile repair or recovery to a garage?

A recovery truck solves a location problem, not a technical one. You still arrive at a workshop that has to diagnose the fault, and general garages often subcontract ignition and immobiliser work anyway.

Column and dash access is all that is required, which makes a driveway, a work car park or a roadside layby entirely adequate. Any programming the vehicle needs is done there and then.

Honesty matters more than a promise here. A minority of jobs need an ordered part or bench work, and if yours is one of them we will tell you at the point we know, not after you have paid for recovery.

What the work covers

Once we know what has failed, the work falls into one of these categories.

  • Rebuilding the existing barrel — new internals, same key, no reprogramming needed
  • Fitting a replacement barrel — supplied and programmed to the vehicle as required
  • Extracting a snapped key — removal, then an assessment of whether the lock survived
  • Replacing the ignition switch — the electrical half, when the mechanical half is sound
  • Repairing or replacing the steering lock — both mechanical pawls and electronic modules
  • Programming ESL and EIS units — including Mercedes-Benz systems
  • Programming an ESL emulator — where the vehicle supports it as a long-term fix

Nothing is called finished until the ignition turns, the wheel releases and the immobiliser is satisfied. The work comes with a parts and labour warranty.
