Why ignition barrels fail, and what it feels like when they do
A barrel is a precision lock doing a heavy-duty job. The wafers inside have to align within very fine tolerances, and every turn of the key erodes those tolerances a fraction further.
A worn key accelerates all of this. A key carried loose in a pocket for a decade, or copied from a copy, no longer matches the profile the barrel expects. It may still work the doors and fail in the ignition, because the ignition is the lock that takes the most load.
If you have started thinking of it as a quirk rather than a fault, it is a fault. Barrels do not recover.

Electronic steering locks: ESL, ELV and ESCL faults
Manufacturers replaced the mechanical column lock with a motorised electronic unit that talks to the rest of the vehicle. It is neater and more secure, but it introduces an electronic failure point where there was previously only a steel pin.
When one of these units fails it commonly fails locked, with a warning on the dash and a steering wheel that will not release. Because the module sits in the immobiliser chain, a replacement usually has to be programmed to the vehicle rather than simply bolted on. That is specialist work, and it is a large part of what we do.
How to tell an ESL fault from a barrel fault
Mechanical faults announce themselves through the key; electronic ones announce themselves on the dashboard. A stiff or gritty key points one way, a steering lock warning with a perfectly normal key points the other.
What to do right now if your key will not turn
Resist the urge to apply more force. Almost every snapped key we extract was snapped by somebody trying just a little harder, and extraction always has to happen before the underlying fault can be addressed.
A few quick checks are worth running through. They sometimes resolve it, and they always narrow down what we need to bring.
- Relieve pressure on the column by rocking the wheel as you turn the key
- Check the gearbox is genuinely in Park, or the clutch pedal is on the floor
- Swap to the spare key if you have one — it isolates key wear from barrel wear
- Look closely at the key for wear, distortion or cracks
- Remove fobs, tags and other keys from the ring to take the weight off
- Do not use WD-40 or similar in the barrel; it makes matters worse, not better
- Do not attempt to extract a snapped key with tools
If the key has already snapped
Best thing you can do is nothing. Extraction is a normal part of our work and the barrel is often reusable afterwards, but only if it has not been damaged in the meantime.
Mobile repair or recovery to a garage?
Recovery is money spent moving a problem rather than solving it. The diagnosis still has to happen, and it happens just as well on your driveway as on a workshop floor.
Column and dash access is all that is required, which makes a driveway, a work car park or a roadside layby entirely adequate. Any programming the vehicle needs is done there and then.
There are exceptions, and we will say so. Some faults need a part that has to be ordered, and a few need bench work. What we will not do is load the vehicle onto a truck before anyone has established what is actually wrong with it.
