Ignition faults fixed where the vehicle stands in Burgess Hill

The maddening part of an ignition fault is that everything else about the vehicle is perfectly fine. The engine is healthy, the battery is good, the keys are in your hand — and none of it counts for anything, because the barrel will not rotate.

We work the other way round. A mobile specialist attends, establishes whether the fault lies with the barrel, the ignition switch, the steering lock or the key itself, and repairs it in place wherever that is practical.

Burgess Hill has plenty of workplace and retail parking, which is where a good share of our call-outs happen. It is far easier to attend than to arrange recovery out of a busy car park.

Why the fault needs identifying before anything is replaced

The overlap in symptoms is the whole problem. A stiff key, a locked wheel and a no-start can each point at several different components. Diagnosis is not a formality here — it is what determines whether the repair costs a little or a lot.

The complaints we hear most

These are the complaints we are called out for most often. Several of them get worse quickly if ignored.

  • Have developed a knack for getting the key to turn
  • Barrel seized completely with the key inserted
  • Snapped key, with part of it left in the lock
  • Key trapped in the ignition and will not release
  • Column lock will not disengage when starting
  • ESL, ELV or ESCL fault reported by the vehicle
  • Cylinder turns loosely with no resistance at all
  • Starting is hit and miss with no obvious pattern

Mercedes ESL and EIS work, including FBS3 and FBS4 systems, with programming carried out at the vehicle.

Broken Key Extraction

Keys snapped off flush in the cylinder removed cleanly, with the barrel assessed afterwards for reuse.

Ignition Switch Replacement

The electrical half of the ignition: traced properly when the barrel itself is mechanically sound.

ESL Emulator Programming

A programmed emulator as a durable alternative to a replacement module on supported platforms.

How It Works

How a Burgess Hill call-out actually runs

It is a simple sequence, and it always runs in this order.

1

Give us the details

A quick call or WhatsApp with the vehicle, the registration and the symptom is usually enough for us to load the right parts and programming kit.

2

We travel to you

No recovery required — we work at the vehicle. We attend anywhere in Burgess Hill or the wider RH15 area. On the driveway, at the kerb, or in a car park; it makes little difference to us.

3

Find the fault, fix the fault

Diagnosis first: barrel, switch, column lock or key. We tell you what we have found and what it needs before we start replacing anything.

4

Full check before we go

Ignition, column lock release and immobiliser are all tested together, and everything we fit carries a parts and labour warranty.

Covering Burgess Hill and the RH15 area

Our Burgess Hill work takes in Burgess Hill town centre, Wivelsfield, Ditchling Common, World's End and the RH15 industrial estates.

Home, work or wherever it has stopped — car parks and driveways are equally straightforward. We have no workshop to bring the vehicle to, and that is the point. The repair happens where the vehicle already is, so recovery is usually avoidable entirely.

We are based at Greenhedges, Felcot Road, East Grinstead, West Sussex RH19 2QA, which puts Burgess Hill comfortably within our regular working area.

Nearby coverage

Alongside Burgess Hill we regularly attend Haywards Heath, Hurstpierpoint, Handcross, Brighton, Newick and Horsham.

Our patch takes in Surrey, Kent, Berkshire, Essex and London alongside the whole of West Sussex. Call with a postcode if you want it confirmed.

Why ignition barrels fail, and what it feels like when they do

The failure mode is almost always cumulative rather than a single dramatic event. Key and barrel wear together, gradually, until the margin for error simply disappears and the cylinder jams.

A worn key accelerates all of this. A key carried loose in a pocket for a decade, or copied from a copy, no longer matches the profile the barrel expects. It may still work the doors and fail in the ignition, because the ignition is the lock that takes the most load.

Most people adapt to a failing ignition without really noticing — a particular angle, a particular wiggle. That adaptation is the warning, and it is the cheapest point to intervene.

Vehicles we see this on most around Burgess Hill

Barrels wear by use, not by mileage, which is why converted campervans and horse boxes appear alongside working vans. Ford, Citroen, Peugeot, Volkswagen, Vauxhall, Honda, Hyundai, Audi and Mercedes-Benz are all familiar to us.

Electronic steering locks: ESL, ELV and ESCL faults

Newer vehicles do not use a mechanical lock on the column at all. An electronic steering lock module drives a pin in and out under software control, and reports back to the vehicle that it has done so.

These units almost always fail in the worst possible state: locked, with the vehicle immobilised. Replacement means fitting and then programming, because the car has to accept the new module as its own. That programming is the specialist end of the work.

How to tell an ESL fault from a barrel fault

The distinction matters commercially as well as technically: one is a mechanical repair, the other involves programming. We establish which before anything is ordered.

What to do right now if your key will not turn

The single most useful thing you can do is stop forcing it. A key being forced in a stiff barrel is the most common way a bad situation becomes an expensive one, because a snapped key inside the cylinder turns a straightforward repair into an extraction job first.

There are a handful of things worth trying first. Now and again one of them fixes it, and either way it tells us more about the fault.

  • Rock the steering wheel gently while turning the key — the column may be loaded against a kerb or at full lock
  • Make sure the vehicle is properly in Park, or in gear with the clutch down on a manual
  • Try your spare key; if the spare works, the fault is the key rather than the barrel
  • Check the key for visible wear, bending or a cracked plastic head
  • Take heavy items off the keyring — weight on the barrel causes and worsens this fault
  • Do not spray oil or lubricant into the barrel; it collects grit and makes the eventual repair harder
  • Never lever or drill at a snapped key — extraction is far easier before anyone has dug at it

If the key has already snapped

Do not touch it. Extraction from an undisturbed barrel is straightforward and the lock frequently survives. Extraction after somebody has been at it with pliers or a drill usually means a new barrel and new programming.

Mobile repair or recovery to a garage?

Transport is the most avoidable cost in an ignition fault. The work itself happens at the column and the lock, both of which are entirely accessible where the vehicle already stands.

No ramp, no lift, no pit. Ignition and column lock work is cabin work, and the programming equipment travels with us.

Honesty matters more than a promise here. A minority of jobs need an ordered part or bench work, and if yours is one of them we will tell you at the point we know, not after you have paid for recovery.

What the work covers

These are the routes available, and which one applies is a diagnostic question.

  • Rebuilding the existing barrel — new internals, same key, no reprogramming needed
  • Fitting a replacement barrel — supplied and programmed to the vehicle as required
  • Extracting a snapped key — removal, then an assessment of whether the lock survived
  • Replacing the ignition switch — the electrical half, when the mechanical half is sound
  • Repairing or replacing the steering lock — both mechanical pawls and electronic modules
  • Programming ESL and EIS units — including Mercedes-Benz systems
  • Programming an ESL emulator — where the vehicle supports it as a long-term fix

Every visit finishes with the ignition, steering lock and immobiliser tested together, and the work carries a parts and labour warranty.

Common Questions

Ignition and steering lock FAQs for Burgess Hill

Common queries, answered without the sales pitch.

Will a repair affect my immobiliser or mean new keys?

Possibly. Rebuilding around your existing key avoids the issue entirely. Fitting new components often means programming so the immobiliser accepts them — we confirm which applies once we have diagnosed the fault.

Which other areas near Burgess Hill do you cover?

As well as Burgess Hill we regularly cover Haywards Heath, Hurstpierpoint and Handcross, plus the wider West Sussex area, then Surrey, Kent, Berkshire, Essex and London. If you are unsure whether you are in range, call with your postcode and we will confirm.

Is there a call-out charge?

We do not charge a call-out fee. The price is for the repair, quoted once the fault has been diagnosed — not a fee for arriving and then a second figure for the work.

Is the work guaranteed?

Yes, there is a parts and labour warranty on what we fit, and every job ends with a functional check of the ignition, steering lock and immobiliser together.

The steering wheel is locked solid. Is that the ignition or the steering lock?

Both faults produce a locked wheel, so it needs diagnosing rather than guessing. A rough or immovable key suggests the barrel; a normal-feeling key with a locked column and a dash warning suggests an electronic steering lock fault.

My key turns but the vehicle will not start. Is that still an ignition fault?

Yes, and this is a good example of why diagnosis matters. The mechanical half is clearly working, so attention moves to the ignition switch, the immobiliser or the steering lock.

Do you work on vans, campervans and horse boxes?

Yes, and they make up a lot of our work. Ford Transit and Transit Custom, Citroen Relay, Peugeot Boxer and Volkswagen Crafter barrels wear out sooner than car barrels simply because the ignition is used far more times a day. Converted campervans and horse boxes on van platforms are covered too.

Can I get a quote over the phone?

We can give you an honest indication from the make, model, year and symptom. A firm price has to wait until the fault is diagnosed, since one symptom can point at several very different repairs.

Do you come out to Burgess Hill, or do I bring the vehicle to you?

You do not need to bring it anywhere. We attend Burgess Hill and the RH15 area as standard, working at the vehicle on a driveway, in a car park or at the roadside.
