Why ignition barrels fail, and what it feels like when they do
An ignition barrel contains a set of sprung wafers or tumblers that the key lifts into alignment. Every single insertion wears both the key and those wafers very slightly. After years of use the tolerances open up, alignment becomes marginal, and the barrel starts needing persuasion.
Keys are half the problem. A bent, worn or badly cut duplicate loads the wafers unevenly and wears them faster. This is precisely why a key can still open the doors while failing to turn the ignition.
Nobody books a repair for a slightly stiff ignition, and that is understandable. But stiffness is the stage at which a rebuild is usually still possible, and a seized barrel is the stage at which it usually is not.

What to do right now if your key will not turn
Stop. A stiff barrel that is being forced is a barrel that is about to contain half a key. That single decision is the difference between a rebuild and an extraction followed by a replacement.
These are worth two minutes of your time before you call us out.
- Rock the steering wheel gently while turning the key — the column may be loaded against a kerb or at full lock
- Make sure the vehicle is properly in Park, or in gear with the clutch down on a manual
- Try your spare key; if the spare works, the fault is the key rather than the barrel
- Check the key for visible wear, bending or a cracked plastic head
- Take heavy items off the keyring — weight on the barrel causes and worsens this fault
- Do not spray oil or lubricant into the barrel; it collects grit and makes the eventual repair harder
- Never lever or drill at a snapped key — extraction is far easier before anyone has dug at it
If the key has already snapped
Do not touch it. Extraction from an undisturbed barrel is straightforward and the lock frequently survives. Extraction after somebody has been at it with pliers or a drill usually means a new barrel and new programming.
